After more than 20 years of pressure from fish farming and several years since the farm closed, it is clear that it will take a long time for seagrass to fully recover. Restoration of the meadow began with establishing the baseline by determining the current extent, damage and condition of the seagrass ecosystem and by assessing the services provided by the ecosystem.The clean up of the coast and the seabed removed the fish farm debris remaining at the area. Today, the first Posidonia oceanica transplants in this area mark a promising step toward the recovery of the seagrass meadow. One message stands out: no institution can do this alone. As local authorities, including the Mayor of Sitia, emphasize: restoration requires coordination, shared responsibility, and long-term commitment. This is where ARTEMIS steps in: not only testing restoration techniques, but translating them into policy recommendations, financing mechanisms, and governance models that can scale across the Mediterranean. Because without policy, restoration remains local.
