Obligatory Penny pic after a looong time away. This is her with her favourite cabbage toy, who she loves so much she just had to rip its stuffing brains out.

2 questions for you:

1. If you had to go off screen today for an indefinite amount of time, what would have to change?

2. How do you manage screen addiction now? If at all.

I don't know what the answer to this is, but here's what I'm trying out:

- using an e ink tablet
- getting an old school flip phone
- preparing offline activities (e.g. reading the paper, books, etc)

The problem is they're all expensive!

7 months in, I am out of the emotional woods (almost) of this addiction. But I still feel the pull to scroll, despite major pain when doing so.

That's addiction right there, and if I said the same about any other habit I'm sure I'd be facing an intervention right now.

"digital detox" doesn't do much - it's like giving up smoking for a week or two just to get back on the bandwagon later.

After a month of limited screen time, I was angry, irritable and depressed (just like when I gave up cigs a long time ago).

I say all this as someone who is literally studying computer science and AI.

There's a lot of potential for good in tech, but the way it's set up now takes advantage of our vulnerability to make us dependent on it in a way that is largely negative.

I've not been able to look at screens for more than 10 mins at a time for a while and 2 things are now obvious:

1. Screen addiction is by far the strongest addiction I've ever had, and everyone around me has it too

2. It's now harder to live offline than it is to live online

Fingers crossed! Most employers I've worked with are keen to help but have no idea where to start - hopefully the review involves disabled people so the recommendations make sense too.

I'd love to see a proper plan for employers here - disabled folk usually already know what they'd like to do so coaching is of limited use. Early employment support is a start but the problems often come later down the line as employers are unaware/not willing to provide the systems needed.

PS the "hidden agenda" in case you'd like to know - I am no longer coaching full time and miss it, plus I'm considering running events for autistic and ADHD people in Sheffield in the future. Perhaps you'd like to attend.

New to coaching?

This is what it involves:
- an initial agreement on how we work together and what we talk about
- questions about the topics we agreed on
- thinking through plans together
- brief notes from each session
- 45 - 60 min sessions in person or online

Not useful for:
- therapy
- working through trauma
- if you're too burnt out for future talk

Good morning Bluesky

Looks like it'll be another showery day here. The garden will look better for it. Just a pity it'll trigger so many weeds

Have a great day everybody
