The average HP fan isn't fantasizing about rehashing the plot of fighting Voldemort or whatever. They're just enamored with the idea of high school drama with magic wands and color-coded personality test factions.

One last note is that as someone else put better than I did, that if you're trying to wean a fan of HP off of it, it doesn't help to offer a better children's lit fantasy school novel series, but instead give them some other self-insert OC wish-fulfillment playground media franchise setting.
