“Haríamos bien en no perder de vista que cualquier gesto descolonizador, por inocuo que nos parezca, es una crítica a las políticas imperiales. Y que como tal, su efecto no se produce en el pasado, sino en el presente y en el futuro”

Surprise.
Clearly formal apologies and engaging in any *talks* (note: not even actions!) to address the colonial and enslaving legacies was too much to ask from the former colonial empires.
Shame on all of them!
The resolution was approved by decent UN members calling on UN nations to engage in talks "on reparatory justice…, measures of restitution, compensation, rehabilitation, guarantees of non-repetition and changes to laws, programs and services to address racism and systemic discrimination."
The UK & EU abstained from the #UN non-binding (!) resolution on recognising the trafficking of enslaved Africans as the "gravest crime against humanity”. As if this had nothing to do w/ their #colonial and enslaving history & legacies.
The US, Israel and Argentina even voted against it!

Beautiful landscape today in #Liverpool after a freezing week!

They've *always* been very good dogs...
Latest evidence unearthed at @liverpooluni.bsky.social excavation sites reveals dogs were domesticated much earlier than previously thought.

As a dog person, I am thrilled to see this stellar team-research publication demonstrating that 15,000 years ago dogs & humans were already enriching each others' life. Our very own Doug Baird @livancworlds.bsky.social is one of the authors of this fantastic study! 🎉

everyone’s discussing how financially stupid this is and they’re right but it’s also logistically stupid. zero way to charge foreigners and not locals without a hell of a lot of racism coming out in the wash

Heading to Dominica in a week to continue the work with the Kalinagos, making my research and Leverhulme funding an enabler for Kalinagos' wellbeing, quality education, equality, and capacity building. Stay tuned for more info in the coming weeks!

And (2) cultural heritage to improve cultural assets for education, tourism, and economic growth. This follows many community discussions and several trainings in sustainable tourism, museums, and education in Liverpool last year with a Kalinago delegation.
We are targeting (1) quality education, integrating Kalinago knowledge in schools to create a feeling of pride among Kalinago children and understanding and support among non-Kalinago pupils across Dominica. This will work towards social justice and a better, decolonised, national curriculum
I was lucky to have my case selected and got incredibly useful feedback and suggestions on how to streamline the necessary actions to improve, together with my Kalinago partners, the life of the Kalinagos in Dominica. Bringing together my research and Kalinagos elders' knowledge and practices,
It empowered all participants to take responsibility and use our knowledge of the past to inform UN goals actions through policy making.
The "Lessons from the past, UN Sustainable Development Goals" conference org by @livancworlds.bsky.social was an absolute success last Monday and Tuesday!
Case studies from across the world packed into two-days actionable discussions.

Fabulous news, and great to see a good mix of Humanities & Social Sciences subjects included here 💃
Congratulations, Christina!! Sounds like a fantastic project!
Fantastic food for thought today coming from the very inspiring research of Dr Alyssa Grossman & a fun challenge: potential collaboration as archaeologist with her and the NY-based artist Selena Kimball to look at artistic interventions on archaeological museum materials!

One of the really soothing things about the ruins of castles is that they are ruins. Militarism seems everlasting sometimes, but even the strongest fortresses crumble and the only thing certain is change
Súper recomendable ciclo de conferencias en la inigualable ciudad de Córdoba (España). ¡No os las perdáis!

What a fabulous evening celebrating all Prize winners, reuniting with colleagues, and meeting my fellow archaeology awardees!
Huge thanks again to @leverhulme.ac.uk! Looking forward to beginning my leave & project in September!
