Geez, what did Google do that I am suddenly getting a ton of push notifications from their app... and only one has been for something I would be remotely interested in. And worst, the snippet isn't even big enough to know if you'd be interested because most of the text is "See more on <keywords>"

Aw, sad to see this little easter egg no longer exists in Google Maps. @methode.bsky.social you need to have a word with that team :)
Also a little confused why in Canada it is asking me to ensure the state and zip code are correct when we use provinces and postal codes here.
And it is so wordy when needing to use it in a conference presentation too! Just about as bad as me having to repeatedly say E-E-A-T from Google's quality rater guidelines too LOL.
Yes, there are undoubtedly some great sites down in those positions that may tank poorly for other reasons, but the fact so many results are pulled from 50+ is astonishing. But it does let Google say hey AIO sites get more traffic than in the regular search results.
Yeah, it is kind of incredible that a lot of queries seem to have no "higher standards" being applied to when you see the urine kidney stones example. And also the thing @ryanjones.bsky.social said where a ton of sources for AIO are pulled from position 50 or higher.
Produce content with short, easily digested chunks… 2-3 lines per paragraph… liberal use of images and bulleted lists. Good for LLMs. @ericenge.bsky.social #pubcon
The number of potential customers before chatGPT and after chatGPT are the same… you just need to figure out how to reach them. #pubcon @ericenge.bsky.social
Upload your blog posts so AI has your voice, have it clone your voice, and then can write your tone. #pubcon @leascudamore.bsky.social
You don’t need to rank for that query, you need to rank for what is retrieved. #pubcon @ryanjones.bsky.social
You don’t need to optimize for what a user is searching, but you also need to rank for what AI is searching to show the results for the user’s query. #pubcon @ryanjones.bsky.social
You need to optimize for people AND AI. #pubcon @ryanjones.bsky.social
Think about how you can attribute sales via Overviews. If you show uo in AIO, people are buying your product - even if its not on your own site - then it is a win. But you also need to measure it and not all companies do, so they think AIO successes could be losses. #pubcon @ryanjones.bsky.social
Stop thinking of silos and start looking at it as overall business successes. Unless your business is ad-supported, then you have a different problem LOL. #pubcon @ryanjones.bsky.social
Stop thinking of keywords, think of semantic relevance. Stop thinking organic rankings, but think of share of voice and visibility. Stop thinking of the algorithm so much, start thinking of systems. #pubcon @ryanjones.bsky.social
When people want to do something, they don’t want Overviews, they want the website… such as restaurants and entertainment. #pubcon @ryanjones.bsky.social
Why does Sindar say you get more clicks from AI Overviews? Because 46% of sites in overviews are ranking in position 50 or higher for the same query, so yes, those sites are getting more clicks. @ryanjones.bsky.social #pubcon
A lot of AI do not show referrers, so you don’t know where the traffic is coming from, such as Grok, Copilot, Perpexity. #pubcon @ryanjones.bsky.social
GEN AI drives less than 1% of traffic across major brands #pubcon @ryanjones.bsky.social
Clients have a real problem, traffic is down, we can’tbjust say its SEO… We have to change how we think of what SEO is. #pubcon @ryanjones.bsky.social

You can add “-ai” to your search to hide Google’s AI overview in the search results. I bet it will become the next adding “reddit” to the search query trick (unless Google decides to break it?) Also, fun party trick: try searching “-ai” on Google Trends and watch it meltdown LOL
Wow: after 15 years, YouTube has taken down the original 'Rick Roll' video due to a "licensing issue," likely due to the acquisition of Astley's record lable.
The metadata remains, but if you click through it goes to 'video not found':

Does anyone have data on % of traffic that disable adblockers when presented with the "please support us" with or without the option to "view site without unblocking this time"? Lots of data on percentage of users with ad blockers, but not behavior when it is suggested to unblock on a site.
Well that was the biggest #earthquake I have ever felt...
I did a Google search for a Norwegian word and AI overviews told me it is the name of some random player character in World of Warcraft with their character name, level, guild and server, with a link to their WoW character page. And no, this isn't some world first raider profile either.
Which also reminds me... any of the evening meet and greet type of functions, please have some non-alcoholic options, even just bottles of water or keep the coffee around LOL. So often it is beer/wine only, with no other drink options :(
A couple conferences I went to had coffee kiosks/carts for those of us who wanted frou frou lattes instead... we don't expect it to be free, but the option to get one is A+ One conference had 100% of the proceeds for the fancy coffees go to charity which was an amazing idea.
