Thanks a lot for highlighting our work🙏🏻
Diagram showing how root exudates shape the rhizosphere microbiome. Exuded primary and secondary metabolites have both positive and negative effects on soil microbes, so the composition of the rhizosphere is different from that of bulk soil.

Together with a team of great colleagues, we edit a collection titled "Harnessing plant microbiomes to improve performance and mechanistic understanding" nature.com/collections/cg… in the journals @natureportfolio.nature.com @microbiomej.bsky.social . It's open for submission till June 2026.
I have attended this summer school many times and was involved in the organizing of the 11th! Highly recommended! Plus, it's in the beautiful city of Utrecht. 😊
🌿 3 new PhD positions in the Ton lab @PPS_UoS. Part of the ERC project '#PlantMemo', exploring how plants remember & respond to stress.

🌍 Why it matters:
These insights extend the known role of plant defenses beyond pathogen resistance — showing they are also crucial in managing beneficial microbiome interactions. This could guide new microbe-based strategies for sustainable agriculture.
🌐Root exudates from different mutants altered WCS417 transcriptome. Camalexin strongly inhibited bacterial motility/chemotaxis.
🌐On the 🌿side, WCS417 triggered distinct transcriptome/ROS responses depending on defense barrier.
🌐Overall, root defense barriers help plants balance growth and defense.
🔑Key findings:
🌐Plants use structural and chemical barriers not only to block pathogens but also to fine-tune beneficial partnerships.
🌐In 15 Arabidopsis mutants, some defense barriers reduced or enhanced WCS417-driven growth promotion and root colonization.
