Yes, it's the negative space that I wiped back here. That whole pot was covered in slip and then I wiped back around the leaf designs which brought back the color of the clay body. And yes! Wax does work as a resist for this.

It basically involves applying some kind of resist to greenware and then wiping back the other areas of the pot with a wet sponge. I apply colored slip to the surface before painting the design on with the resist, which is how I get the raised, colored designs.
