@govnl.bsky.social has turned down the proposed South Coast Fjords Marine Conservation Area. This is a huge drawback for Canada's #30by30 conservation target.
MCAs benefit both the ecosystem AND the economy, rather than hindering them. More info here: lnkd.in/eZeqVfv8

Do you teach #rstats? Do your students complain about how lame and old-fashioned dplyr is? Don't worry: I have the solution for you: github.com/hadley/genzp....
genzplyr is dplyr, but bussin fr fr no cap.
Here's a new genome from the CCGP: The Lahontan Cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi). This species, endemic to Western North America, may be in danger of extinction.

Inside me there are two wolves. One of them has a 15 genome edits the other 20 genome edits. Neither of them is a dire wolf.
Colossal Bioscience did not revive dire wolves, despite a sensationalist Time Magazine cover story.
Making genetically modified animals that are cosplaying as extinct species is not de-extinction.
One of my first internships was with ME Sea Grant (where I learned R!), and I wouldn't be where I am now without that opportunity. This is devastating for the future of coastal/ marine management in Maine.

(1 of 5) JUST IN: January temperature marks a new global milestone.
Arctic sea ice coverage near record low.

Someone should write a book about the genomics of marine organisms titled The Shellfish Gene
Remember: you didn't use RStudio for your analysis. You used R for your analysis.

Happy New Year!
P.S. Here’s us last night below.
Merry #fishmas! Along with being adorable, Lumpsuckers are used in Atlantic Salmon #aquaculture to eat sea lice, resulting in interesting genetic differences between wild and domestic populations. #25daysOfFishmas
Been waiting for the #Fishmas Lake Sturgeon day! 🐟 #25DaysOfFishmas
Atlantic #salmon, brown #trout and their hybrids can be difficult to distinguish, especially at early life stages. This new DNA-based method can be used to screen lots of individuals to verify the species or detect hybrids! 🧪🐟
With a low-cost DNA extraction, it is less than 1 euro / sample.
The head of a dark colored shortnose gar in a well planted aquarium tank.
Three gar, one shortnose and two longnose, in a well planted aquarium tank with other fish in the background.
Two gar fossils in a museum display case.
Visited Chicago just in time for #Garweek and #fishmas! Saw live Shortnose & Longnose gar at Shedd Aquarium, then fossils at the Field Museum. The living gar's DNA is very similar to their ancient relatives!
Jumping salmon.
A study of 632 freshwater fish species from 9,989 locations finds climate warming affects fish abundances, with increases at the poleward edges of species’ distributions and declines at the equatorward edges of species’ distributions. In PNAS: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Quick field trip attempting to retrieve temperature loggers failed due to high water levels, but views like this remind me of why I'm doing #ecology
The Golden Redhorse is one of my favorites from biodiversity surveys on the Buffalo River, AR! #25DaysOfFishmas
For those looking for undergrad/postgrad/ post-bacc #fellowsips in #ecology, I would highly recommend the NPS Scientists in Parks Program! Happy to answer questions about my experience with Great Lakes I+M www.scientistsinparks.org/apply

Around this time last year @boyswillbebugs.bsky.social, @allomygale.bsky.social, @spissatella.bsky.social, @jfmclaughlin92.bsky.social and I published an open letter on supporting transgender persons in STEMM.
We have decided to open to additional signatures 🧪⚒️🦑

Took some time to come together, but so happy to have this paper out!
Hey! I'm a grad student studying salmon genomics, I'd love to be added!
