My wonderful colleague @superlinguo.bsky.social on one of my favourite podcasts @thisguysucked.com 🎉🎉
just finished listening to this episode about Daisy Bates and wow what a story!
I appreciate the conversation about ethics in linguistics & the legacy of colonialism in Australia. thank you @superlinguo.bsky.social!

It's ok to try lots of different things and figure out what works for you, personally. Just because something often works for most people, you aren't always most people.
It's also ok if something you've tried before doesn't work the next time. It's a living process of exploration.
I really enjoyed this thoughtful discussion between @superlinguo.bsky.social and @ceaubin.com
37 year old woman is a temporal fact, but 38 year old woman is just a state of being. Even now I'm in my 40s I think that my gender has always been 38 year old woman.
What do you do when the only records that remain of a language were made by someone who had absolutely horrendous views of the people who spoke it?
In our latest episode we get enthusiastic about a crossover episode with Claire Aubin of @thisguysucked.com!
I've been holding all the best anecdotes back just so you can enjoy them in the episode!
This person has been living rent free in my head for a decade and now you can learn about why a tiny Irish Mary Poppins lady has taught me more about how NOT to do community-based linguistics than anything else I've ever read.
Reminder that the LingComm Grants close at the end of this month!
The dedication at the beginning of TRUE COLOR is "For Margaret". We assumed that was someone important to the author herself, but...
Our latest bonus episode is the second half of our interview with @korystamper.bsky.social, where we get enthusiastic about the twist in her new book TRUE COLOR!
wow this ~does look like the inside of my brain after a day at work!
Me, at the end of THAT chapter: YOU SET ME UP STAMPER!!
But Ben, you have to understand. We have trams.
It's so great that we did a @lingthusiasm.com two-parter for the first time ever. You can listen to the first half now, and the spoiler-filled second half will be out as a bonus later this week: lingthusiasm.com/post/8115654...
Happy book birthday to the best non-fiction plot twist I've read in a long time:
I want to give a big shout out to researchers at @latrobe.edu.au who are working hard on #longcovid. But they still need a few more people for this study!! Please, please, get in touch using the details on this flyer.
Is this your car's revenge for you talking about using your ebike a whole bunch at the moment 😅
I'm glad we've never had to actually find out!
It probably looks lopsided in all kinds of ways from the outside - but it works because we talk about it a lot and we know what our shared and personal aims and goals are. That goes for @gretchenmcculloch.com and me but also the rest of the team.
But also, I earn academic credit for working on @lingthusiasm.com - directly via public engagement, indirectly via academic writing about - and that went towards job security in 2020, promotions in 2021 and 2026, and that's all actual dollars. So the money-making I get to do is just less direct.
I've had a salary as long as we've been doing the show, and now I have job security. I love my team and don't want to lose them, it's really that simple and self-interested.
I don't talk about this much, but I've never seen much of the money that @lingthusiasm.com makes, and for the last few years the amount has been zero.
The fun thing about running your own projects is you can do whatever the heck you want. But also, this isn't charity, it's strategy.
Another highly recommended episode of @lingthusiasm.com (or link Susy I am): @gretchenmcculloch.com and @superlinguo.bsky.social talking "raindrops" ♥️ with @emilymbender.bsky.social open.spotify.com/episode/2bhZ...
For me, I'm glad to still be getting mileage out of this anecdote that is probably the closest we've come to having a full blown argument 😂
lingthusiasm is always fun, but this episode is *extremely* fun
When it comes to language in most sci-fi, you're definitely safe to trust your linguist instincts!
I haven't seen it, but this went by in my feed said I think it gels with your feelings: arstechnica.com/culture/2026...
It's probably pretty evident in the episode that we are too!
