Beautiful day to see this cute white-rumped sandpiper Calidris fuscicollis, very far from home. Only a handful of records in Australia, lucky Victoria this time. 🎄

A project that started during our COVID-19 lockdown, birdwatching within the 5 km radius from our home. Daily observations over 5 months in 2020/21 yielded a modelled 87 species, and yesterday I saw species 77: a flock of great cormorants, flying in formation above the traffic lights.

Day one of our ARC DP22 field campaign in the hot and dry mangroves of WA is complete. Can’t wait to work out the hydrology of these arid coasts. A gristly introduction to mangroves for our group’s new team member the unperturbed honours student Sophie.

Baillon’s crake in the Western Trearment Plqnt (one of three!) = an exciting weekend. Despite the broad distribution and not a lack of trying this is my first observation of this tiny gem.
