A blog post I wrote for the SoTL@SHU Blog is now live! It's about Using Interactive Map Activities to Build Rapport with Students, something I often do during a first session with a new class to get to know them.

A couple of days at Chapelgarth Estate has made all the difference to my research progress. Being in beautiful surroundings, having nothing to think about but writing, and spending lots of time in nature made me so productive and has re-energised me for a busy semester ahead! #writingretreat
Starting the new year as Senior Lecturer! When I began my academic journey, I set a goal to become a Lecturer by 30, so reaching Senior Lecturer by 29 is a milestone I’m incredibly proud of. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way and am excited for this next career stage!
Semester 1 is complete ✅
It’s been another hectic one but I don’t think I’ve loved my job more than I do right now. I’ve been lucky to work with so many wonderful students, be supported with my different research projects, and on top of all that receive a promotion! #academic #university
Had a great time presenting at #SocMedHE2025 on Tuesday! Such a friendly, welcoming conference. Came away with lots to think about and embed into my own research and practice, as well as some collaboration opportunities for the future 👏🏼
Thank you Sue! It was such a lovely conference ☺️
Brilliant presentation from Nikita @nbridgeman.bsky.social 'From TikTok to Teaching: Social Media for Inclusive Guided Independent Study'. #SocMedHE25
Applying #UDL principles when developing learning environments for independent study to enhance agency by @nbridgeman.bsky.social #SocMedHE25
Thanks Sue ☺️
The first conference I went to people wouldn’t speak to me as they thought I was a student and one person even came up to me and said ‘what year?’ (of study), when I responded ‘Lecturer’ they just said ‘oh’ and walked away…put me off conferences for a while!

A4 The RAISE network (specifically the buddy scheme) has been great for me and has led to collaborations with academics from other universities that wouldn’t have started without it #LTHEchat
This has been a game changer for someone like me who wanted to be SoTL focused, but didn’t have the support to be prior to this network 👏🏼 #LTHEchat
A6 📣 For @lthechat.bsky.social #LTHEChat folks tonight - @seda-ed-dev.bsky.social #EdDev Magazine and blog and #Take5 @aldinhe.bsky.social blog are all great places to begin #SoTL journeys, read, contribute, share, implement, change practice. Many other groups and subgroups.
The #Take5 blog (and @danceswithcloud.bsky.social) really helped me get my work off the ground this semester so really couldn’t recommend it enough 👏🏼
A5 I try to set aside a day a week for research. It doesn’t always happen but it means I at least get a few hours here and there! #LTHEchat
A2 Since starting to use my research hours for teaching focused research I’ve felt so much more immersed in what I’m doing…it’s also made me more reflective and curious about different approaches which I think has naturally strengthened what I do #LTHEchat
Today the kitchen next to the one I was teaching in was doing a chocolate making workshop. As you can imagine, my class and I were thrilled when they said ‘you can try whatever you want’ 🍫
Session abstracts are now available online - do take a look to find out more about the range of topics we'll be discussing on Dec 16th :-) There is still time to register if you would like to join us in Lancaster - closes 5th Dec. See website at: socmedhe25.wordpress.com/2025/07/16/p...
Thank you Santanu! Was great to hear your thoughts on the topic #LTHEchat
Definitely something to think about…do students actually read or watch resources, or do they learn from summaries? #LTHEchat
Thank you Sandra! Learned so much from your thoughts (as always) 👏🏼
Thank you Sue! Really grateful for the opportunity to contribute ☺️
Thank you for the opportunity and great discussions! Lots to think about going forward ☺️ #LTHEchat
Love this! The name ‘independent study’ makes it sound like it should all be done in isolation, but the community aspect of our approach can often be the key to learning #LTHEchat
Exactly this 👏🏼 #LTHEchat
#LTHEchat A6 To staff: Really help students bond, get to know & trust each other, then set more group tasks - inclg P2P teaching and multimodal assignments. To students: make friends/study partners/groups - share the workload and spend a lot of time talking about it in the canteen.
Our Education System Cartoon - If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.
A6 Give students a choice in how they learn a topic and how they show you they have. This is a favourite cartoon cite #LTHEChat
