A postcard artwork based on the novel ‘The Call of the Wild’ by Jack London (first published 1903). Read in Dutch translation: ‘De roep van de wildernis’. Recently I found a sketch that I made in 1986, representing a typical flat Dutch landscape. That same year I read ‘The Call of the Wild’, situated in Yukon, a wild part of western Canada. To me brought a direct longing for mountains (born and raised in the Netherlands I wasn’t used to higher levels). In 1989 I got the opportunity to go to Alaska, my first contact with similar areas. During the years some more were to follow. In my contribution I use the 2026 WBN motto: the mountains keep on calling. The vowels already left, they couldn’t wait. By Frans Baake
