it's been tetchy all day, but particularly now
Light blue corner of a wooden structure, with two light brown chrysalids flanking a black, spiky caterpillar, hanging upside-down.
A little mourning cloak nursery in the corner of our garage door.
An elephant hawkmoth looking slightly tetchy at you with a big round eye from under its wirey antennas. It is bright pink and olive green and very sleek. Magnificent moth pal, would recommend
(TBH if you don't like moths I'd have thought my name would've put you off, sooo IDK... 🤷🙃)

20. Critter
all of this is to say, I’m not sure how I’m vertical right now.
don't have room to worry about the knees right now, so I got that going for me at least.
see one shoulder surgeon on Wed, another on Thurs.
trying to smother hope. the less invasive surgery is still an awful procedure, and at best will buy me a few years. but the total replacement is more akin to carpentry
also having an MRI on my right knee, which is the crappier knee at the moment.
last shoulder MRI was in ~2015, last knee was in 2020.
so after all that, it turned out that the surgeon needs MRI imaging, not CT. apparently "bone on bone" doesn't actually always mean bone on bone?
MRI is today. I am "too young" for a total shoulder replacement. but maybe I have enough structure left for a stemless hemiarthroplasty
oof I feel this my fam in 😵💫
A collection of expertly drawn stick figure doodles of a disheveled man, a reddish-brown blob of a dog, and an orange stick kitten in various sleeping positions. The title "How I Slept Last Week" is written across the top, and the day of the week is written above each doodle.
How I slept last week. A retrospective.
a zebra swallowtail, aptly named for the black and white stripes on its wings. it has a red spot and a long tail on each hindwing. it's on an amur honeysuckle, but is associated with pawpaw trees - both pawpaw and these butterflies are super common around here
a chunky black and yellow striped insect. it looks very much like a yellowjacket, but it's a hoverfly! Sphecomyia vittata
a thrips a small, narrow, black insect with two skinny wings
a moth with varying shades of brown in a complex pattern. Morrisonia

A smallish butterfly resting on a leaf. It has yellow-brown wings. The forewings are unmarked except for a thin reddish line running along the middle. The hindwings are marked by a broad red border, with a pattern of silver lines and black spots.
The same butterfly on a different leaf, seen in profile from a different angle.
The Red Edge (Semanga superba) spotted at Lornie Park Connector, Singapore on 22 March 2026. A lovely, uncommon butterfly with an unmistakable red edge on its hindwings.

To be less pissy for a mo.
If you don't use an SR it may help to know that lotsa screen-readers can start & stop reading, but can't rewind or fast forward.
So a summary of description & context up front helps us decide whether to keep listening. Names work as part of that, but can't be all of it…
& here's a piece on moth behaviour in relation to light that I had the joy of illustrating in 2024 - www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-...
Finally the wind seems to have died down enough to get the shelter up and moth trap on! 😁 💖 🦋
The thread below has some details of my trap and how it works.
in my experience most cats are on the blanket, not under the blanket. Spike has taught Dandy the ways of true coziness, lucky you!
this post didn't trigger the labeler, haha
it's ok to be confused, Chancleta. I am confused about most things most days
common fiddlenecks (Amsinckia menziesii)
unidentified caterpillar- probably a tiger moth (Arctiinae)
a black gloved hand behind a plant and caterpillar The plant is a common fiddleneck, with sunny yellow/orange petals, and thin, slightly hairy leaves. The caterpillar is climbing the plant stem, its head just below the base of the flowers. It is a big chonk of a critter, black bodied with a multitude of reddish brown hairs. Probably a tiger moth larvae, but not 100% sure. shorter, true yellow flowers are visible in the background- California goldfields

I had so much fun (but no luck!) searching for galls on my tree. I did have a gall ornament at least!
lots of false positives with this labeler, but this one is fucking hilarious
an orange and white cat looks noble. a generational moustache. a generational statesman
you look everywhere for saviors.
you hand power to the grasping and the vain: blind to the truth that those who seek power are always unworthy to wield it.
Chancleta, meanwhile, cleans up your messes again and again. he seeks no recognition. he offers no complaint.
an orange cat is snuggled into blankies like a fat little shrimp with his back feet in the air showing his pink toe beans. he has one eye slightly open
Sorry I can’t help clean up right now I’m actually super busy
here’s one of the adult moths for good measure.
