Very excited to have my story "The Shape of Mischief" included in this excellent book. Thank you to Flame Tree Fiction!
🎂 Born this day: Francisco Goya (1746)
🎨 Court painter, chronicler of war, and eventual king of nightmares.
I wrote a blog about why I sometimes love him, sometimes can’t stand him—and why he might be the most novel-worthy artist in history.

I started a new series over at Substack called "Signed, Always" that takes a look at history through written letters. It's literature-heavy (for now) but I consider anything when choosing the letters. This is today's post about Thomas Merton raging against the machine.
Robert Burns
Happy Burns Day!
Some hae meat an canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it;
But we hae meat, and we can eat,
And sae the Lord be thankit.
One of the "projects" I want to commit to this year is reconnecting with the Romantic poets. In this chaotic (often infuriating) world, we could all use a little beauty. I wrote a short piece on my infatuation with John Keats and why he still matters:
Great piece in the @nytimes.com about under appreciated composer Ferruccio Busoni. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/24/a...

Cover image of Samantha Harvey’s novella Orbital.
OK, I read Orbital and I have to say, it just did not connect with me. Harvey has a poetic gift with her prose, but there are only so many different ways you can describe the beauty of earth from low orbit. A lack of emotional buy-in due to a lack of plot and interesting character arcs killed it.
