The inspiration of this work was by a biblical poem in which a bride reveals her face to her lover. The women surrounding her are modeled by Ellen Smith, an English laundress, Fanny Eaton, of Jamaican heritage, and Kiome Bonnet, of Romany descent. The young boy, whose name is unknown, was brought to London by an American around the time slavery was abolished there. Rossetti's choice of models often challenges rigid Victorian beauty ideals. Yet, the central placement of the white sitter, modelolitical theory. By producing titanic icons of classical liberal, romantic, led by Mary Ford, suggests a racial hierarchy. The luxurious fabrics and jewelery from North Africa and East Asia reflect Victorian fantasies of cultures outside of Europe.

Rembrandt, “Belshazzar’s Feast” (1635-38) • A dramatic oil painting that depicts King Belshazzar at the exact moment he realizes his time is up. He recoils in shock as a divine hand writes glowing letters on a dark wall. This scene from the Old Testament (Book of Daniel) is filled with intense light and shadow, highlighting the king's ornate gold robes and the terrified expressions of his wealthy guests as they see "the handwriting on the wall."

In this Old Master painting, King Belshazzar is enjoying a grand feast and drinking from stolen sacred artifacts when, suddenly, God’s hand appears and writes a prophecy on the wall foretelling his downfall.

🎨 Conversion of Saint Paul (c.1601), Rome — the original Cerasi version.

Crowded, explosive: Saul thrown to the ground as heaven breaks in. Horse rearing, angel descending.

Too dramatic for the chapel? Perhaps.

In Ñuu Savi (Mixtec) and surrounding Mesoamerican cultures like the Zapotec, bat heads symbolize night, death, sacrifice, and the underworld. They are associated with caves—seen as portals to the spirit realm—and act as guardians, representing a connection to ancestors, agricultural protection by eating pests, and transformation.
The Mixtec people are one of the oldest and most culturally rich Indigenous groups in southern Mexico.
They call themselves Ñuu Savi, meaning People of the Rain in their language, reflecting their spiritual bond with nature and the weather that sustains their crops. Their homeland, known as the Mixteca region, stretches across the highlands of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero, with misty mountains, fertile valleys, and sacred mountain peaks that shape their identity.
The Mixtec are remarkable artisans and storytellers. They create intricate gold jewelry, turquoise mosaics, and beautifully illustrated codices that record their myths and dynasties. Their ancient deerskin manuscripts preserve one of the most complete Indigenous histories in the Americas. Their artistry and craftsmanship were so advanced that Mixtec goldsmiths were highly sought after by other Mesoamerican kingdoms.
Even after the Spanish conquest, the Mixtec held on to much of their identity. Their villages remain centers of weaving, pottery, and farming, and their language is still spoken by hundreds of thousands today. The Mixtec story, like the Zapotecs, is one of endurance. They’ve carried their traditions through centuries of change, keeping their rain-soaked mountains and ancestral ways alive in modern Mexico.

The vibrant, undiluted fields of color assert an undeniable surface presence. A reddish-brown horse occupies the foreground, its head turned away, revealing a long, curvilinear blue mane. Expanses of luminous yellow dominate the þackground, interrupted by sweeping bands of green and thin, cerulean streaks suggesting water. The fluid application of broad strokes creates undulating planes across the landscape. These simplified forms, divorced from representational fidelity, communicate an essentialized experience of the natural world. The bold juxtaposition of saturated hues carves the scene into distinct emotional territories. This radical implification strips away superficial detail to reveal underlying energies. The dynamic interaction of color fields and organic shapes suggests a
spiritual connection to the land. Such intense chromatic declarations participate in the era's embrace of subjective perception. The unblended colors amplify the direct emotional impact of the scene.

This artwork is a key example of German Expressionism, specifically the 'Blaue Reiter' (Blue Rider) group, which Franz Marc co-founded with Wassily Kandinsky. Expressionism emerged in the early 20th century as a reaction against perceived materialism and alienation of modern life. It sought to express subjective emotions and experiences rather than objective reality. 'Horse in a Landscape' reflects the shift away from representational art towards abstraction and the exploration of inner states. It bridges the gap between Impressionism's focus on light and color and the more radical abstraction of later movements like Cubism and Abstract Expressionism.

Like traditional art historical still lifes, Lichtenstein uses everyday objects such as a lemon and a glass of water on his table top. What is new is the artist’s approach. Lichtenstein’s art was influenced by commercial advertisements and comic books; he appropriated not only specific images but also the visual presentation of these cheap and quick printing processes using Ben Day Dot stencils. His images use thick black outlines, flat geometric shapes and primary colors to create a new fine art form that melds elements of both high and low art. He is the anti-Abstract Expressionist – his paintings are devoid of emotion and hold no higher meaning. Lichtenstein uses a mirror to further fragment his composition for additional interest.

Painted around 1507, Raphael’s Saint Catherine of Alexandria marks a shift from his early training under Perugino toward a more dynamic, "High Renaissance" style. While he retains Perugino’s signature atmospheric landscapes and angelic facial expressions, Raphael introduces a complex, curving contrapposto pose. This movement is a direct result of his time in Florence, where he studied and synthesized the works of his two greatest rivals: Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
The painting’s composition specifically mirrors the graceful, spiraling form of Leonardo’s Leda and the sculptural monumentality of Michelangelo’s unfinished Saint Matthew. Raphael harmonizes these influences to depict the saint in a moment of divine ecstasy rather than physical torment. By omitting traditional symbols of her martyrdom, like the sword or palm, he focuses the viewer’s attention on her upward gaze and her spiritual connection to the golden light breaking through the clouds.
Symbolism remains a subtle but vital layer of the work, evidenced by the inclusion of a dandelion seed head in the foreground. In the artistic traditions of the time, this bitter herb served as a "clock" or a reminder of the Crucifixion and Christian grief. Likely intended for private devotion, the painting serves as a perfect example of Raphael’s unique ability to blend intense human emotion with the "universal harmony" that defined his career.
