New British Sign Language signs for marine species are here, making conversations about nature and climate more accessible to everyone! 👋
The @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social Scottish Sensory Centre tested them out while cleaning oysters with #RestorationForth 🦪

I learned about a brilliant project yesterday to support British Sign Language (BSL) users, creating new signs for scientific terms in chemistry, oceanography, data science & more.
And they're fabulously descriptive. Do have a look and share!

💡Key Finding 2: #Hearing children process linear patterns better. #Deaf early signers are good at both: linear and circular patterns. This indicates that deaf early signers have stronger #visuospatial skills.
💡Key Finding 1: #SignLanguage proficiency greatly supports patterning, as can be seen in #deaf early signers. Deaf children with delayed access to sign language have particular difficulty with patterning.

New Research on Patterning in Early Math Skills:
Circular patterns are a valuable learning resource, demonstrated by Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children fluent in visual-spatial sign language.

🚨 New preprint live! AI is reshaping how deaf people communicate and seek access. But is it opening doors, or reinforcing old hierarchies? Too often, interpreting norms shape how sign language AI is designed today. (forthcoming in Language and Law) (thread) arxiv.org/abs/2505.02519
If you're at #SIGN10, come say hi! I'll be presenting a poster on how different sign languages represent numbers tomorrow afternoon in poster room 3.
Wonderful project! The story problems in this Advent calendar were originally created by Deaf Math experts. Looking forward to the next doors! 🎄
Wonderful! 😊 Would love to join.
