It's almost a month into 2025 and I've seen the first great UK release of the year. The Brutalist is an audacious and yes, monumental, cinematic achievement that makes the case for Cinema with a capital C. Go see it on the biggest screen you can find.
LOVED IT!! An amazing achievement
Heading to BFI Southbank to catch Brady Corbet's The Brutalist in glorious 70mm VistaVision. Very excited for this!
Challengers missing out on both original score and original screenplay is a travesty. Does The Academy even LIKE movies? #oscars #filmsky
I love this film. It's by no means good but it's so true that at least it's reaching for something and not playing safe. Ennio Morricone's score is outstanding too.
1 week to go?? That's insane. Or should I say "Unsane"?
I'll see myself out...
At times like these it can be therapeutic to dive back into things that bring you comfort and joy. For me, it's Key and Peele's college football names sketches. These never fail to make me laugh, especially the name "Cartoons Plural" which lives in my brain rent free.
In our ongoing celebration of the best and most groundbreaking examples of digital cinema, @broganjmorris.bsky.social and I are back at The Castle, this time with Unsane, which will be preceded by an intro and followed by post-film chat in the Castle bar.
Rest in Power, David.
I'll catch up with you behind Winky's.
For me, the action* IS the juice.
*170-minute runtime
Hitting BFI Southbank this weekend for their Visconti season with @lindsayhallam.bsky.social. I have only ever seen The Leopard so I am really keen to see these renowned classics for the first time on the big screen.
Oh this is terrific. When a Q&A becomes a 10-minute writing masterclass.
Watched this the other day and loved it. I have only just really got into P&P's films, and they are so spectacular that it's heartbreaking to learn their work was almost lost to time. Colonel Blimp is a total masterpiece and I Know Where I'm Going is one of the most romantic films I've ever seen.
I've always wanted to read this bad boy and finally cracked the spine after getting it for Xmas from the wonderful @lindsayhallam.bsky.social. I must say this book is A LOT but I am absolutely loving it. FYI this book was first published 25 years ago!
Elon Musk: Why isnβt there enough water in California?
Grok (burning through an entire lake to generate an answer): Wokeness
Ride with the Devil is brilliant. Took way too long to get to it. It's like what if Ken Loach directed Young Guns. Double Team was a surprise for me. No one told me a huge chunk of it is basically a riff on The Prisoner with JCVD as Number 6.
Everyone mocked my physical media collection but now as the city burns and the power fails I can know that I perish alongside many of my favorite films
Super excited to be screening Soderbergh's smartphone shot thriller (iPhone-noir is that a thing? Cellu-noir?) on 29th Jan at the Castle Cinema in Hackney with my pal Brogan. You can find us both at Distorted Frame Film Club here: @distortedframe.bsky.social.
