Good chat, thanks all! Off to start the day here in Sydney now ☀️👋
A6 - a real understanding of what life actually looks like for our students, academics, educational professionals etc. Only then can we see what lies deeper and design appropriately. How we can get there ➡️ foster open / non-judgemental spaces for these conversations to happen. #LTHEchat
A6. It would be learner-informed, collaborative and impactful and would be born out of celebrating diversity rather than accommodating it. We can learn so much from people's varied knowledge and experiences #LTHEchat
A6: and in terms of steps to get there, it has to start and end with knowing our learners. It’s a fabulous opportunity to continuously listen and learn from the barriers they share with us #LTHEchat
Agree it’s frustrating - I have had to walk back from a lot of tables in some recent work! Some was warranted and done better in other ways, but it would be nice to have alternative tech that can read them better
A6: inclusive learning design would be an expected element in any PD, especially when new tech is introduced. We would all be ready with the question, “so does this work for x learners?” #LTHEchat
A5: Involving students in design is also massive - some great initiatives from UTS like this one: lx.uts.edu.au/blog/2024/12... #LTHEchat
A5: I think telling students how the learning design/ materials they’re using are inclusive is a great start. Pointing out what is or isn’t working well to raise awareness at first #LTHEchat
Ooh, I love this idea! #LTHEchat
I’ve seen this done well, and would like to see more of it! #LTHEchat
A4: and getting hands-on is often a great ‘aha moment’ - using a screen reader or understanding how someone with ADHD experiences certain materials #LTHEchat
A4: make it part of the conversation in every PD - some concepts take a while to sink in and settle, so little and often is helpful #LTHEchat
A3: Knowledge of various design elements (of what is/isn’t accessible), keeping in mind different student needs beyond the obvious, making the time to do what’s needed (eg alt text for images!) #LTHEchat
Onwards to the third question ▶️ Q3: What are the challenges you face when designing inclusive learning materials? #LTHEchat
Yep - properly used headings are a lifesaver for someone navigating a document! Tables not so much… #LTHEchat
A2: Lots of little moments, but the turning point was an online workshop I had designed for a group before learning there would be a legally blind participant joining with screen reader tech. Cue panic, and clumsy adjustments! #LTHEchat
Q2: Share a moment when you realised the impact of inclusive design—how did it shape your practice? #LTHEchat
Q1: What does “designing for diversity” mean to you, and why is it more important than ever in education? #LTHEchat
Join us for tonight's #LTHEchat which will explore the hidden curriculum with Dr. Pam Birtill @diervilla.bsky.social , Dr. Richard Harris @richharrisleeds.bsky.social and Dr. Madeleine Pownall @maddipow.bsky.social at 8pm GMT. Read the blog post at: wp.me/p4QBCl-1O7
Looking forward to it! Bring us your best (and trickiest!) questions…
I started joining #LTHEChat about a year ago. So glad it has moved to BlueSky 🦋. I completely agree with everything @lucyblakemore.bsky.social has written. It is a wonderful mid week pick me up. Come and join us for a #flutterchat.
Long may the time zones favour us here in the southern hemisphere… (at least until the clocks change). I’m not sure I can do 5am but 7am is achievable!
Thank you @suebecks.bsky.social @profsallybrown.bsky.social and @kaysambell.bsky.social for making my first #FlutterChat such a positive experience. A bit retro, but in a really good way 🙃
I'll be back!

'This is not quite what I planned' (which could describe most of my work, but here refers to a reflective pie chart in which I review last year's work.

…and also WHY they are using AI tools - this is one of the most useful conversations I’ve had with students in research interviews recently. Their reasons can help us understand what’s working and not working in the learning and teaching process #LTHEchat
