Signed and shared. It took a social media shitstorm before Sainsbury’s allowed the fire service to rescue this gull here a couple of weeks ago.

Birdwatchers - I am looking for a long lens camera for taking bird photos, if anyone has an old one kicking around for sale.

I’m an entry level photographer, but looking to take the next step (I’ve outgrown my coolpix!)

Yesterday saw my first Green Hairstreak of 2026, a full 12 days earlier than my previous record.

Easily overlooked due to its small size and restless nature, there can be few finer butterflies in the UK than this verdant wonder.

Recorded 93 birds in two hours at Wild Ken Hill today, including some seriously early migrants. The best walk I’ve had in months - spring is here!

Listed as near-threatened in the UK, this small plant flowers from March to July in open, sandy ground, and is an important plant for insects in early spring. It requires periodic soil disturbance from creatures such as rabbits to thrive, however our herd of Exmoor Ponies have taken on that role. An area here called The Plain is littered with historic ant mounds, and these mounds hide historic secrets. On their occasional visits to this part of Wild Ken Hill, the ponies have kicked and disturbed the mounds, allowing an ancient seed bank to be exposed to light. It is on these exposed ant hills that Shepherd’s Cress is now proliferating. Classed as a winter annual, Shepherd’s Cress is still declining across the country. The instinctive efforts of our grazing rewilding team here have reversed that trend. A true rewilding success story. www.wildkenhill.co.uk

Recorded a Sedge Warbler singing away at Wild Ken Hill this morning. Has to be my earliest record by some margin.

I hope that those proud patriots come out to vigorously protest the May Day celebrations and Morris Dancers this year.

This pagan wickedness surely can’t be tolerated in are great Christian country.

Well my thoughts are, the meadow next door is awash with them each summer (see photos), and are the only orchids I’ve seen here.

As they are within a few metres of the garden they were my fist instinct - more than happy to be corrected and find it’s something else!

Roll on summer to find out!

Glorious day despite the fog.

Skies alive with oodles of Common Crossbill, Chichaffs ‘chiff-chaffing’ everywhere, Blackcap singing, frogs getting sexy, and I found an active Raven nest.
