So on Monday, February 23rd, at our 124th Street and Sherwood Park (inside the Golf Den), we will be a doing gluten free takeover of the deep fryers at Woodshed! So that means onion rings, crispy colonels, popcorn chicken and mushroom caps for everyone!! Spread the word. *Please note our Cameron Heights location will remain closed that day, BUT should this be a successful event we will explore including that location in the future! Accessibility isn't just ramps and captions. Inclusion is imperfect, but organizations need to listen when disabled people tell them their needs. Especially when it's a fairly simple one like this, they should find ways to accommodate (or at least not make us pay for something we can't eat!).
Advocating for yourself and others like you when you have celiac disease feels incredibly difficult sometimes. I can often end up feeling like I'm being a problem when I speak up for what is actually an accessibility issue for people with this disability.
Update on this: self-advocacy is hard, but it's worth it! Edmonton Opera just emailed me to let me know that there will now be gluten-free boxes available for people who need them (celiac/allergy). It's good to see an arts organization being responsive to concerns like this.
