"The only way to stop more extreme events is to stop adding greenhouse gases to the air, esp. carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning. Anything our govt can do to move away from fossil energy we would all be thankful for." #climateaction #electrifyNZ #activemodes ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ด๐๐๐

The damaging events are on the right hand side of the graph. The right hand side of the graph is where we live now.
Here is a version for local use of the amount of officially declared States of Emergency for climate related reasons
We dub this bike the DougalMobile for obvious reasons! ๐ฒ๐ถ #dogsonbikes #cargobikes
CarBrain is alive & well! "We need 2 entries in and out of Scott Point because it would halve the traffic." #InducedDemand ๐คฏ The real problem is the closed walkway/cycleway so parents say: "You can't let a 5-year-old walk these streets cos construction's going on."

Lively panel discussion in the hood tonight on how we ensure our transport system is sustainable for the future ๐ Vote Greens of course! ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ด๐๐โก๏ธโ๏ธ #activemodes #freePT #electrifyNZ
"Keat said that had two components - 100 percent renewable electricity generation and slowly electrifying the transport fleet.
"Most other countries in the world outside MAGA US states and New Zealand are doing that now, at pace. For some reason, New Zealand's going down the 1980s path."
"The opportunity for a cultural reset, establish a more resilient, healthier & cheaper way of living in NZ. Why is none of this on the governmentโs agenda?"
๐คฏ It's so blindingly obvious, surely someone in the Beehive is thinking like Simon?๐ฆ #nzpol #climateaction #costofliving #fuelresilience
Snap! I reckon most healthcare/medical-type appointments are easier on a bike: Doctor, Optometrist, Lab Tests, Skin check, Breast screen, Donate blood, Flu & Covid vaccinations etc. ๐ฉโโ๏ธ๐ฌ๐ #BetterByBike
C'mon Kiwis: โavoid, shift, improveโ are essential for both decarbonisation and energy resilience #climateaction #fuelcrisis #nzpol
โThe cityโs transition away from the car, tho fantastically chaotic, has become a global role model. Under mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social, Paris was โthe most influential city in the worldโ says Canadian urbanist Brent Toderian. Hidalgo, stepping down after 12 yrs, exulted: โThe bike beat the car.โโ
One other thing, watching Jacinda in action, not an actor playing her but by crikey her with behind the scenes snippets never made it more obvious how much of a leadership vacuum we are in, Jacinda would never have failed us in a crisis, it should be complicity viewing #NZPol
Oil reserves last for weeks.
Solar panels last forย decades.
Itโs time that we got serious with solar!

In Nov 2025 Chris Bishop removed the incentives that existed under the Clean Car Standard to encourage the import of fuel efficient cars and penalize gas guzzlers. This move cost Govt $264m. And increased NZ's fossil fuel use and emissions. Dumb and dumber

I mean, it was obvious the numbers were going to look like this, but it's still startling to look at them and be confronted by what an absolute fantasy this whole thing is.
I appreciate the clarification, but those of us who are needle-phobic would appreciate a slightly less graphic pic! ๐ซจ
People rushing to drop $50k on a new EV and commit to years of payments, insurance, registration, WOF, etc.
I'm trying to decide whether to replace the $7 kickstand feet on my "EV" or wait another month.
Cargo e-bikes would probably work for a lot more people than you'd think.
Hey Tim, we use chair leg feet/tips from bunnings - much cheaper than R&M and they come in various sizes, so good idea to take the bike so you can try them on! www.bunnings.co.nz/surface-gard...
This does not rock
When cars kill, it's just the cost of doing business. When e-bikes get popular, suddenly we need strict ordinances to stop "accidents".
Bike cops rule! Check out the high speed chase; much faster thru the city, can utilise cut-thrus, always first on the scene (ahead of cops in cars) ๐ฒ๐ฎ

Being able to take my scooter on the bus absolutely crushes the travel duration - cutting the walk time down to almost nothing, so instead of 1hr 10 to get from one end of the city to the other, it'll take me just 40 minutes.
30 minutes of that 1hr 10 is just walking to and from the bus stops.
I reckon this InterCity April Fool is a bloody great idea! ๐งThe 1st bicycles were panned + banned in many places, but today they're a cheap & "green" travel option, a high-profile sport & every kid's rite of passage - graduating from training wheels to 2wheels ๐ฒ๐๐

Even without insane and illegal wars, the thing about any dependency, including car dependency, is that once youโre dependent, they can do whatever they want with the prices.
Real freedom is choices. #UrbanTruth
โI feel I have done my job. People can see through the lies because they see, live and breathe it and they see things are better for them.โ
We're f*****d?! ๐โ ๏ธ
It's confirmed: Kiwis are #carbrained ๐คฏ NZ tops the 30 countries surveyed in car usage, ahead of famously car-dependent USA. 51% of peeps in Aotearoa said it would be impossible to live without a car; 66% said it was their primary mode of transport ๐ Will the fuel crisis make a difference? #nzpol
57.7% of NZers, 2.9 million people, can reach public transport within a 10-minute walk. Auckland hits 87.8%. The govt's new fuel subsidy targets 143,000 families. Free fares could reach 20x as many. NZ has the access. What's the argument against?
Very occasionally I agree with our Mayor... "To pay people to carry on doing exactly what they did before, when we know it's not a good idea to have everyone driving into the city, strikes me as dumb, really." ๐๐๐ฒ๐ถ #PT #activemodes #crisiswhatcrisis

Iโm sharing this because gatekeeping in the cycling community has to stop. If our collective goal is to get people out of cars, we cannot attack the exact tools that make a car-light lifestyle possible. E-cargo bikes eliminate excuses. Let people use the tool that works best for them.
I biked 2 months in New Zealand in my 20โs. I took a car/bus through some of it. (Our plan exceeded our biking legs.) The land I biked I still feel with an intensity/intimacy that driving canโt match. Read this article.
