The carnivorous lifestyle of the round-leaved sundew makes this peatland plant a fascinating species ๐ฑ
The sundew is a strange and beautiful plant that can be found sitting among the soggy sphagnum mosses at the shores of bog pools, on wet heaths and peaty moors.

๐พ Grazing in the uplands
๐ Sheep nibble at vegetation low to the ground to create a short, generally uniform, sward (area of grass)
๐๐ฅ Grazing is also vital for wildfire prevention, reducing fuel loads, modifying vegetation, and aiding ecosystem recovery

Hare's-tail cottongrass in full bloom ๐ผ, growing through coir netting. This species can be difficult to spot at this time of year, but during the summer it's fluffy white seed head contributes to the 'summer snow' found covering many hills ๐

Great to see sphagnum mosses growing through coir netting and establishing on coir logs๐These little beauties are ecosystem engineers, creating the wet, acidic conditions needed for #peat formation on the hills. Not only do they benefit the climate, they can also reduce flooding and wildfire risk ๐ฆ๐ฅ
๐ฟDamaged peatlands contribute an estimated 10% of global greenhouse gases.
๐งLowland peatlands like the Ballaugh Curraghs can form when a shallow lake fills in with partially decomposed vegetation over thousands of years.

More coir materials have arrived over the last couple of weeks. These will be used to protect reprofiled peat hags from erosion and to slow the flow of water from the hills ๐ฆ They can be awkward to move around, but luckily we have some really fast workers in the DEFA Upland Team ๐
Come and have a go at practical restoration work, while learning all about the vital role peatlands play on the Island๐ Places are limited, so reserve your spot here: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/power-to-t...

Just look at those colours ๐ It was a misty start on the hills today, but if you look down there is plenty of brightness to be found. Lichens and #Sphagnum mosses are particularly vibrant in the winter, making up for the lack of flowers ๐
๐ฎ๐ฒ Manx Wildlife Trust are welcoming expressions of interest for the IIEM25.

Find out how we've been restoring our peatland this winter by reading the latest blog on our website www.manxpeat.org ๐ We also have a new 'resources' page, where you can access reports on our upland wildlife among other things ๐
Having a pair of fluffy foot warmers (look closely ๐๐ถ) is essential when working on the hills in winter โ๏ธ We've started work on a new site, reprofiling peat hags so they can revegetate and keep that carbon locked away ๐
These actively eroding areas of peatland lose carbon to the air and water ๐ฆ Reprofiling them will help to protect the stored carbon and reduce emissions โบ๏ธ
Water emerges from the hillside and trickles slowly though the #peatland vegetation. Hummocks of sphagnum moss ๐ฟhelp to slow the flow of water downslope, reducing the chance of flooding after heavy rainfall๐ฆ Natural flood management is one of the many benefits of peatland restoration ๐
