An Orkney Vole sits nibbling a blade of grass
📢 Some great news from Orkney!
A new report shows Orkney Vole abundance last spring was the highest it's been since efforts to remove invasive non-native stoats began.
This small, elusive vole is found nowhere else and is threatened by the arrival of stoats (in 2010).

An interesting storymap about gulls and urban environments, including a nice photo from our recent paper (with @edkroc.bsky.social).

Raccoon information seeking! Very cool work on raccoons optimizing information gain in puzzle solving from @sarahba.bsky.social and lab:

1/4 Australian sea lions do something very similar to teaching their pups
They studied the behaviour of a mother in detail using video, GPS and accelerometers, and compared her trips alone with those when she was hunting with her young.

Last night we fitted new tracking tech to Jack Snipe @StaffsWildlife Cuckoo Bank.
The tags are Cellular Tracking Tech (CTT) and enable us to get live movements as they go.
A big thanks to @pulsarvisionukroi.bsky.social who sponsored our first tag.
This is a huge step for this species and us.
Coral background with faint heart illustrations. A glossy male Blackbird with a bright yellow bill faces left. Large title reads: “Birds as bad exes*” Smaller text reads: “*Yes, you read that right.”
Happy Valentine’s Day, from us to you. Tag your exes. Xoxox

Two plump Woodpigeons sit close together on a wooden fence, one leaning towards the other in a gentle, reassuring pose. Above them is the caption: “You look lovely dear, stop fretting. No, I’m sure they won’t write ‘feral pigeon’ this year.”

Plastic circular object held aloft on a beach, sea and sky in background.
Another day, another year and another of these mystery objects washed up. What are they and where are they coming from? Numerous suggestions have been put forward* but we still haven't found an exact match.
For ID purposes videos can be great for familiarising yourself with seabird flight actions, structure, etc. but it’s a pain tracking down useful clips. I’ve collated video links for various N Atlantic species here #seabirds #seawatching #birding #birdID

Dead dogfish lying on the sand with a black hair tie caught in its mouth/round its head.
Dead dogfish lying on the sand with a black hair tie caught in its mouth/round its head.
A sad sight - a dead dogfish with a hair tie caught through its mouth/round its head. Duly reported to the Shark and Ray Entanglement Network. Hair ties are a very common find on beaches - over the years we have picked up thousands.
Also Very best festive wishes and to a happy new year that will hopefully include a new generation of happy gull chicks 😁
Aww so lovely! I think I did first follow your account when the chicks were fledging last year, it's a perfect roof for them to grow up and looked like they had some fun 😆
Also love the peaceful and happy content you produce with Yuki and friends 🐕 thank you 🙂
Hi! They will most likely be the same pair of herring gulls that nest on this roof annually, they re establish their nesting territories and can start sprucing the old nest up from as early as January. It won't be their offspring as HG take 4 years to reach maturity and may not return to this area.
I can’t believe an albatross just walked right by me… 😭🪶

1. Some good news at last. This week’s column is about the amazing thing a couple of us stumbled into three years ago, which we’ve now developed into a global research programme. It doesn’t change everything, of course, but it could help change quite a lot. + 🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Great recovery! Orphaned Herring Gull 24N:C from Cork City was taken in by Wildlife Rescue Cork and released on 20th August. On 27th Nov it was seen on San Lorenzo beach in Gijon, Spain. Just the 7th Irish Herring Gull to be seen in Spain! 🪶 @btobirds.bsky.social @npwsireland.bsky.social
Could be mixed flocks of species and age groups they are joining, we don't have the data on this yet currently to do more than guess though. Sorry for the long response, I love talking gulls 👀 🕊️4//
I can't say as to the mechanism of what causing these individuals to move further, they do receive quite a lot of post fledging care, but this does vary quite a bit it seems. My thoughts are that they seem likely to be following LBBG migrating through as the timing does seem to fit. 3/
These have been both wild and rehab juveniles reported from colour ring sightings. One of these juvs was also a GPS tagged individual from my studies! I'm hoping to publish about my study of juv HG movement and dispersal in Cornwall asap. 🙂 2/
Oo thanks for the tag Liam 🙂 And fantastic movement record for Irish HG!! As you both have rightly said we have ideas but we still don't know much about juv gull movements. We have had a few HG from Cornwall turn up in N Spain and 1 to N Portugal. 1/
