I’m so looking forward to speaking at this fantastic conference organised by @niamhroisin.bsky.social. Wonderful line-up of speakers working on infertility from the early modern period to the present. I’ll speak about Irish women’s experiences of pregnancy loss & infertility in late 20th century.
The problem when I graduated was that there were 200 modern British history PhDs putting in applications for every job, you had to apply for like 50 jobs to get one, and a fair few people left academia before they did. That was unpleasant in its own way, but it wasn’t a death spiral like it is now.
Noticed this too. I think there are lots of errors with transcription. In one record I looked at for my own family, a visitor was listed as brother and given surname Kelly even though it was clearly Collins in the original. Doesn’t seem to be option to submit corrections to transcriptions either?
Happy 1926 Irish census day! This is an amazing resource, huge undertaking by the NAI. Managed to find all eight of my great-grandparents. Interestingly, my great-grandmother’s father had filled their form in Irish so took a bit longer to locate them. nationalarchives.ie/collections/...
We didn't deserve this day.
#DIBLives Known to a generation of Dubliners as 'The Diceman', street performer, gay activist & icon Thom MgGinty (b. #OTD 1952) introduced a high level of theatricality and wit that spawned a legion of imitators. He often appeared in character at political protests. www.dib.ie/index.php/bi...

New article in Oral History by me, Sarah Mason & @livideehistory.bsky.social based on our experiences of research with Irish women: ‘Out in the open:reflections on researcher well-being and emotional honesty in oral histories of trauma’. DM if you don’t have access! Thanks @oralhistsoc.bsky.social.
It turns out, when you make the claim that life begins at conception, you can make all sorts of slippery slope arguments that lead to scary places.
Completely agree. I’m not sure this type of article would have found a home in many other journals either and as authors we appreciated the support and encouragement of the journal. Plus the conference last year was fantastic!
100% agree with Craig and appreciate the support @oralhistsoc.bsky.social showed my co-authors and I with this article, which was originally presented as a panel at the OHS conference last year. I’d encourage anyone working on oral history to join and publish in their journal: ohs.org.uk/join/
That goes without saying!

Fantastic presentation by Naomi Samake-Backert of the RE:SHaRE team as part of the @cshhh.bsky.social seminar series this evening. Naomi spoke to us on her important research on virginity testing and reproductive surveillance at Heathrow airport in the late 70s. #histmed

Haha, brilliant! Thanks a million for reading!
I have a new OA article out on the early history of Irish young people’s anti-abortion group Youth Defence. It’s part of a special issue by Agata Ignaciuk and Sylwia Kuzma-Markowska on anti-abortion activism in Europe. Thanks to reviewers and the RSE for funding.

Thanks Emmet. Managed to get a copy of ‘Truth’ off Discogs in the name of research. The musicianship was surprisingly decent and one of the songs was actually pretty catchy. 😂 I appreciated the use of a “hidden track”, had forgotten about that trend on cds from the late 90s.
Hi Tom thanks for a fantastic paper this evening. Really fascinating to hear about the different activist groups organising on this issue and the personalities involved. Sorry I had to leave before the Q&A. Looking forward to reading the book!
Thanks so much, Brian!
