Is Gender‐Inclusive Language Left‐Wing? The Social Meaning of Four Gender‐Inclusive Strategies in French and German Despite evidence that gender-inclusive language represents genders more equally than generic masculines, it still faces resistance, possibly due to its perceived association with left-wing politics. ....

Les débats sur l’écriture inclusive invoquent la nécessité d’inclure tous types de personnes (argument pour) vs difficulté de déchiffrage (argument contre).

Mais en fait… les motivations sont souvent + politiques que linguistiques ⬇️

I stopped using Google for searches about a year ago and switched to DuckDuckGo, which has been sufficiently satisfying so far.

But I just tried a stacked search in Ecosia and DDG, and Ecosia blew DDG out of the water. That's just one search, but clearly I need to experiment with Ecosia more.

This post is amazing. I knew about (and regularly forget about) some of these but there are so many other useful tips in here.

All the ❤️s to librarians!

I’ve been slowly but surely working on getting off US tech (and decrease tech use more generally), and I find this guide very handy, especially as someone in the Mac universe.

Wrote just 320 words today. But they're good words, and they didn't exist yesterday (well, at least not in the order I put them in). I'm going to call this a win.

I see pâte d’arachide 🇨🇦 vs. beurre de cacahouète/d’arachide 🇫🇷 and bleuet 🇨🇦 vs. myrtille 🇫🇷. C’est comme ça?

I think the peanut butter I buy here in the North African shops is pâte rather than beurre d’arachide…an artifact of France’s colonial project, mayhaps?

Nice!

Annoyingly (at least for this English speaker), Spanish uses the same base for blueberry and cranberry: arándano (blueberry), arándano rojo (cranberry).

There's a new Canadian indie booksellers site and it looks cool!

I get my books from @argobookshop.bsky.social in Montreal but it's great to have another indie backup option with faster shipping when I haven't planned enough in advance for them to get it in

Administrative language in Spanish is not transparent to most, and even less so to this gringa. Instead of being dismissive/impatient, this lady explained (overexplained, really) things in plain language, went and consulted a human, corrected and re-entered incorrect info, all with genuine goodwill.

Given the continued pushing of time/emotional/cognitive burden onto users/worker bees from higher ups, I'm super grateful (& ngl, I also super surprised) to the Hacienda/tax office lady who was 100% present, kind, and helpful during *two* office visits. >>

'AI Is African Intelligence': The Workers Who Train AI Are Fighting Back Kenyan workers are still the underpaid labor behind AI training, moderation, and sex chatbots. The Data Labelers Association is fighting back.

I met with AI data labelers in Kenya who are organizing their colleagues to fight the brutal working conditions and horrible pay given to the workers at the "bottom of the AI supply chain." They believe the NDAs they've signed are unenforceable so are speaking out:
