Are Chromebooks helping students think or helping them avoid thinking?
This post explores the ethics of 1:1 learning, the balance btwn access and attention, and why the real issue was never the Chromebook itself.

20 years in the classroom has taught me that students need more than just a curriculum—they need resources. 🍎 I’m now a @ChalkboardCandle affiliate to help fund my classroom! 🕯️

🐾 New post alert — Snoopy in the Digital Doghouse, Issue 02!
Remember how Charlie Brown could NEVER bring himself to talk to the Red-Haired Girl? That paralyzing, stomach-dropping, "the moment is too big" feeling?

Add two active kids and rising costs, and it’s tough. Teachers aren’t asking for luxury, just pay that reflects the work we do and the future we’re shaping. #VirginiaTeachers #TeacherLife #EducationMatters #757Teachers
Reading today’s Virginian-Pilot piece on fading optimism for teacher raises hit hard. My husband and I both teach, both in grad school, and still spend $100+ a month on basic supplies for our students. #757Teachers #VirginiaTeachers #TeacherLife #EducationMatters www.pilotonline.com/2026/03/01/s...
For example, one class needed more work with operational definitions, while another needed reinforcement with research methods. I still have two classes left to try this with, but I’m excited to see if this approach really moves the needle!
Look what I created with a little help from AI! My AP Psych students recently took an AAQ, and I used the results to design targeted activities based on what they actually needed. With AI support, I generated practice tasks focused on the specific skill gaps. #edtech #appsy #datadriveninstruction
Our district needs stable, permanent leadership immediately to address the challenges facing our schools. I hope the Virginia Department of Education can resolve this quickly so the focus can shift from paperwork back to our students. #VDOE #StudentsFirst #EducationLeadership #NorfolkVA
There is a certain irony in seeing our new leader’s start date delayed by the very administrative red tape they are being hired to manage. While it’s a vivid reminder of the bureaucratic hurdles many of our teachers face, the delay itself is concerning. #VDOE www.npsk12.com/p/~board/div...
EdTech. Engagement. And yes—a little wisdom from the Peanuts crew.
Because real learning isn’t about flashy tools… It’s about helping students learn, try again, and stay curious.
Grab your coffee and take a look. ☕

Pardon the lighting. My Gov students wanted to show what they did for Black History Month. This is just a few of the examples. #BHM #blackhistorymonth #socialstudies
Using Peanuts as a lens, this season explores how we stay human, creative, and connected—especially when the tech lands us in the doghouse.
More reflections coming soon. Good grief, it’s still teaching. #SnoopyInTheDigitalDoghouse #PeanutsGuideToTeaching #TeacherReflection #EdTech
Season 2 of my blog series is taking shape 🐾
Snoopy in the Digital Doghouse is a new chapter of The Peanuts’ Guide to Teaching, where I’ll be reflecting on teaching in a world full of screens, AI, and well-intentioned tools that don’t always work the way we hope. open.substack.com/pub/kdporter...
Happy that the week is 1/2 over. The snow day on Monday and the delay yesterday was a nice surprise. #highschoolteacher #757teacher #snowday

Been teaching for 19 years and still learning new things about procedures and protocols. Thank goodness for quick timing. #teacher #highschool
Starting on my next course at Regent University, Research Design and Analysis. Wish me luck!
I’ll take that! #newyear2026 @merriam-webster.com #myword2026
Back to reality… have to get lesson plans ready for Monday! #socialstudiesteacher #highschoolteacher #newyear
No but they would vote to give themselves a raise. #boredteachers
My hope is that this year brings moments of joy, peace, and happiness for us all. #happynewyear #2026happynewyear
As we welcome the new year, I’m reminded—especially as a history teacher—that 2026 marks the 250th birthday of our nation. It’s a meaningful milestone, one that invites us to reflect on our past, consider the lessons it offers, and think carefully about the future we are shaping. #2026happynewyear
One of four AP Psych classes EBQs graded. I wish there was an easier non time consuming way. My students are improving with their writing though! #APpsychology #goingcrosseyed #EBQs
I love “Winter Break.” As a teacher, I can take time and read books I want to read for pleasure. Meaning I can finish the first book and get the second one read before going back to work. 🥰📖 #history #localparanormal #Folklore #Tidewaterregion #reading4fun
My girls now has “The Never Ending Story” theme in their heads. Thanks #StrangerThings. Now I have to show them the movies. #neverendingstory
Thanks for the information.
Real learning requires teams—co-planning, specialists, and data that actually informs re-teaching instead of just confirming what didn’t work the first time. Repetition without reflection is just noise. The same goes for homework.

They need time to process, move, collaborate, and learn at different paces.
And here’s the hard truth: teachers can’t do it alone.
#teaching #teacherthoughts #highschool
Direct instruction has value—but a 90-minute block of only direct instruction in a 4×4 schedule is not teaching. It’s talking. And talking longer doesn’t equal learning more.
Students need to engage, not endure.
They need to create, not just copy.
