#Wildfires are becoming a systemic risk in #Europe.

Our latest brief shows:
• ~1M ha burned in 2025
• rising impacts on ecosystems, water, and carbon
• risk expanding beyond the Mediterranean

We need a shift: from reaction to prevention and resilience.

A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.

Auschwitz was at the end of a process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers.

This hatred gradually developed: from ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.

Auschwitz took time.

From Wildfire Risk to Resilience: The Investment Case for Action From Wildfire Risk to Resilience: The Investment Case for Action highlights that continuing to prioritize suppression and post-disaster response is no longer sufficient.

🔥🌲 Excited to share a report from @weforum.org that I contributed to:

Proud to have been part of this work, especially as wildfire risks grow globally and we need stronger strategies to protect communities and ecosystems.

De facto.. eu até fiquei à espera para ver qual seria a posição de LM. Não fiquei surpreendida, e suspeito que o psd será o próximo a ser suprimido. A narrativa já está lá “a nova direita”.. que triste.

Pollution is a major driver of disease. Harmful chemicals travel far beyond where they are released, contaminating air, water & food systems and contributing to millions of premature deaths a year.

That’s why we must #BeatChemicalPollution at its source, using a #OneHealth approach: bit.ly/3Nxmjyl

I absolutely agree with you, Africa and then also South America would be my areas to investigate. In these continents was where I found the higher uncertainties in this modelling exercise. Maybe in the near future? Who knows? 😇

Fig. 4: Additional post-fire soil erosion and trend per continent for consecutive fire years 2006–2019. | Nature Geoscience

These results point to a clear gap: the lack of effective land management in many fire-affected regions.

Persistent post-fire erosion appears closely linked to long-term land degradation, highlighting the need to prioritize post-fire land management.

Fig. 3: Mean recovered areas by time since fire per continent. | Nature Geoscience

Recovery after fire is often incomplete.

Globally, only 39% of cumulatively burned areas recovered between 2001–2019. Recovery is particularly limited in Africa (46%) and Europe (56%), even after single fire events, leaving soils exposed to ongoing erosion.

Fig. 2: Global pre-fire and post-fire soil erosion for the year 2019. | Nature Geoscience

One key result: post-fire soil erosion is persistent and cumulative.

Although erosion peaks after fire, nearly 70% of annual post-fire soil erosion is driven by past wildfires, while only ~30% comes from the most recent fire year.
