The former headquarters of Leipzig's Konsumzentrale
I left with a notebook full of ideas and incredibly helpful feedback.
Thank you to all the contributors, to Ben Schaper @chewschaper.bsky.social for his invaluable feedback as our workshop respondent, and to colleagues at @unileipzig.bsky.social for all the behind the scenes support.

(5) I am of course aware that this doesn't cover everyone's individual experience and I have never been on an hourly-paid contract only. But hopefully this helps to shed some light on the plight of precariously employed staff at Oxford.
(4.2) in their contracts. Despite many SLs having several years of teaching and research experience, the SL automatically keeps them quite far down the hierarchy within the college and university and hardly offers any chances for career progression.
(4.1) And research leads me to another paradox. Even though SLs are expected to provide world-class research-led teaching, even the university doesn't really recognise them as independent researchers. SLs are rarely, and often only following their own initiative, considered as research active
(3.2) employees paid vastly different wages for at times more or less doing the same job but SLs are often unable to produce the research and outputs that could get them hired in more secure positions.
(3.1) The teaching load is so intense that there is hardly any time for research during regular working hours during term time. Besides, many SLs have to take on two 0.5 jobs in order to sustain themselves. And that never adds up to simply one full-time job but always more. Therefore, not only are
(2) College-only employees are not included in any legal disputes between UCU and the university and cannot take strike action to improve their situation. Through this system, strikes hardly ever have any impact at Oxford as most employees and classes are college-based.
(1) The "calorie wage" gives you (a number of) free meals. Does this really make up for the wage differences? This is a nice thing per se but for whom? Are employees with familial or care duties really able to make full use of it? Does this advance the university's inclusivity and diversity agenda?
