big time. I file ‘Don’t go chasing waterfalls’ alongside ‘Top to toe in tailbacks’ as one of those kinda-nonsense-when-you-think-about-it-for-even-a-moment lines that nonetheless somehow work intuitively. ‘Please stick …’ is an attempt to extend the metaphor but it’s like explaining dream logic

if I had one wish for this crazy, mixed up world, it would be a faster adoption of USB-C. I just think it would make such a difference you know?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie:

cool visuals, ok set pieces, well directed action

first draft writing, zero vibes, no joy, no character work, barely a functional joke

messy AI gen plot, stolen beats from better films, tired daddy issues

tough to think of a lazier animated movie series

agree completely. Found Galaxy much the same as the first. I get this doesn’t have to be high art, but there are few kids movies trying less hard than this series. The laziness is quite staggering.

A book cover featuring a female detective with a neon cityscape in the background.

Blurb reads:

One dead tech boss. Two mismatched detectives. A shocking secret at the heart of Silicon Valley...

DC Kal Vickers is out of his depth.
He accepted a mysterious invitation to swap his humdrum London beat for the glittering tech capital of the world. Now he'd better learn fast: Impossible technology, blatantly evil corporations, and helpful AIs with absolutely no hidden agendas* … just some of the things his tough-as-nails new partner has no interest in preparing him for…

Detective Jules Brousse is done.
Done with this city, with those who control it. She spent her whole career taking on the corporations, holding them to account for every corrupt move they make. But now with the odds against her stacked higher than ever and the SVPD becoming more toothless by the day, she’s running on empty, with zero time and even less patience to babysit some strait-laced Brit.

Billionaire playboy Tyrell Gomes is dead.
When the infamous tech bro CEO meets a grisly end in his penthouse office in the Tangle – the exclusive high-rise district at the center of Silicon Valley’s neon sprawl, and the richest five-mile-square on Earth – it falls to the SVPD’s new homicide team to solve the case.

As the detectives begin to unravel a conspiracy that goes far beyond simple murder, they discover the stakes are higher than they could ever have imagined. Finding the killer becomes a race against time: Who would want Gomes dead on the eve of his company’s takeover by a fierce rival? Is the victim really all he appears to be? And just what is the classified project that threatens to place the very future of humanity in the hands of quite simply the worst people imaginable?

*not a guarantee

Perfect for fans of Blake Crouch, John Scalzi, and Cory Doctorow, don't miss the sharp and witty transatlantic crime thriller that's The X-Files meets Chinatown by way of Slow Horses and Beverly Hills Cop.

a wall e robot is standing next to another robot Alt: Wall-E is standing next to another smaller robot. There’s a dirty exchange, which only gets the little guy more annoyed than he looked at the start.

if you’re someone who names ‘the first half of WALL-E’ as one of your favourite Pixar movies, it is regrettably time for us to part ways

6 year old loved his first watch of Star Wars (A New Hope) but there was only one line he jubilantly repeated after the scene finished …

a cartoon drawing of a pink car with a hook attached to the front wheel Alt: it’s a gif of that Simpsons episode where Homer illegally parks at the World Trade Center and gets clamped (booted). He drives away anyway and the clamp (boot) makes a real mess of his car, let me tell you

I’ll give you this, America: Those things that go on car wheels to stop them moving are better called boots. We call them clamps, and I’m not keen

Rosamund Pike Says Her Doom Movie With The Rock Was 'Probably One of the Worst Films Ever Made' and 'Could Have Ended My Career' - IGN Rosamund Pike has recalled her experience working on the 2005 Doom movie, which she described as “an absolute bomb” that could have ended her career.

I believe the word she’s looking for is ‘craptacular’

it’s for sure not perfect, but making a movie about how all you need is friendship, then making its sequel about suffocating dependent friendship … that’s a bold move you have to respect

An excerpt from an in-progress sci-fi detective novel project, which reads:

‘Six hours,’ Vickers shook his head as he threw his overnight backpack into the cramped trunk of Brousse’s Subaru. ‘Suppose I always thought LA was like, the next big city over. Just a little downstate, you know?’
‘It’s both of those things’—Brousse slammed the trunk shut—‘and it’s a six-hour drive.’
‘Bloody hell your country’s big,’ said Vickers. ‘If I drove north for six hours from my old flat, I’d practically be in Scotland. Well, not quite, but the North of England at the very least. Which does feel like another country, let me tell you.’
‘Yes, your country is very fucking tiny, Vickers, have we not already had this discussion?’ said Brousse. ‘Look, ‘it’ll be fine, man. The roads are straight as hell. I’ll drive ’til I get bored or tired or pissed off or whatever, and you can handle the rest. We hit it hard, we’ll be there by sundown.’
‘You don't mind me getting behind the wheel of the ol’ XT again?’
Brousse raised an eyebrow. ‘You drive like an elderly pangolin, I think it’ll be fine.’
‘An elderly … pangolin?’
‘Yeah, a pangolin, a fucking pangolin, man, you never watch a wildlife documentary before? Little aardvark-cockroach looking thing. Notoriously timid creatures, Vickers. Just like your ass.’
‘Ok, yeah I think I—’
‘So this one show about pangolins, it was showing how they’re being hunted for their scales or whatever. Those poor motherfuckers’ souls truly are too gentle for this cruel world.’
‘Seems like it had a real effect on you.’
‘Those little guys, they were getting attacked, you know, by poachers. And all they could think to do was curl up into a fucking ball and let those the assholes snatch ‘em right up off the ground.
‘Yeah that’s tough,’ said Vickers. ‘Evolution didn’t do too much to prepare them for us to come along I guess.’
‘Yep, those dumbasses don’t deserve to survive,’ said Brousse, ‘if that’s all the game they’ve got.
‘Cute though. That all your stuff?’
