I’m writing a short story collection about Canadian soldiers in the Afghanistan War. @TheNewQuarterly.bsky.social published one of those stories yesterday! I’ve been a fan of TNQ for a while, so I’m thrilled to see my words in its pages. #WritingCommunity #5amWritersClub #LitMag #AmWriting #BookSky
Honoured to contribute a story to this issue alongside a group of outstanding writers and poets.
“The Call of the Void” is part of a collection in progress about Canadian soldiers in the Afghanistan War. The linked stories explore themes of combat, relationships, grief, and military culture.

“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it.”

I just finished the reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy and it absolutely destroyed me. Having a small son, and having just lost my father, this horrific masterpiece hit close to home. It reminded me to cherish every moment with my little boy and helped me appreciate the good in my life.

Tudo bem by Erika Schmidt
Tudo bem was taken in Portugal. This entrance is a work of art. I had to wait for somebody to walk by to get my human component and some scale.

At the Met by Erika Schmidt
People in art dedicated spaces is a favourite motif of mine. I enjoy the art but also how the human form interacts in these environments. At the Met reflects that fascination, capturing the subtle interplay between viewer and art.

"The sun glared down on the paddy field where she lay. She looked about his size and age, blonde hair and a dark green dress. Next to her floated a man in a muddied white shirt, blue jeans, cowboy boots, and a black hat."
