That's exactly what it was. Paris was Harvard material and her not getting in didn't make any sense. She had the grades, the extracurriculars, and ambition. She could've gotten in to any school she wanted to.

Out of all my side characters, Daniel is the most tortured, but not because he deserves it. He's lost a lot & carries around a ton of trauma, which he uses as armor. He's cold, guarded, & recklessly ruthless as as a result.
