New Zealand has formally rejected amendments to international health regulations, implemented by the World Health Organization following the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision, communicated to the WHO overnight Monday, makes New Zealand one of just 12 nations to reject the rules. Of these, seven said they had rejected the amendments as they needed more time to finally implement them. But the Ministry of Health provided no justification for New Zealand’s rejection. The amendments were finalised in 2024, after international negotiations co-chaired by former Director-General of Health Sir Ashley Bloomfield. They establish a new alert level for global health emergencies (the pandemic level), which would allow for greater coordination between countries and allow the WHO to issue non-binding recommendations to member states. The changes also strengthen equitable access to medicines.

Dr Bex reflects:
“The distress came from having something which worked really well suddenly ripped away, replaced with instability and fear and worry. It was the instability of not knowing what we could do now, the fear of not being able to trust official responses, and worry for the future.” #nzpol
So $716m for the 2 new worse ferries plus the $670m we lost canceling iRex means the 2 new ferries now cost us $1,386 million
Thanks better business managers! /s

Fast track concerns. 4000 homes. On rural land. With no planned infrastructure. A large part of it in a flood plain. Strong opposition from council. Still approved.

He said he "wasn't caught up with where we are on that"
Luxon seemed completely out of the loop when asked by journalists about this at his presser today #nzpol
“NZ is now one of just five countries to have rejected the post-pandemic changes to the WHO’s global health rules without providing a reason.”
Does this government do anything except enrich itself, align with corrupt states, erode democracy, undermine public health and consistently be the bad guys?

"Raising the threshold is not something I am looking at right now, my focus is on getting people off the jobseeker benefit and into work."
How are they meant to live in the interim, Louise?

Man I wish someone else would write an article about the Moa Point Green Party lies going around
The lies are insane

Resene factory workers walked off the job yesterday for a Living Wage. E tū members at Resene have been fighting for a Living Wage since September. They're struggling to pay bills and put food on the table. Resene needs to do the right thing and pays its staff enough to live a decent life. #nzpol
Always so quick to lay (imaginary) individual blame to issues, whether it be the unemployed or immigrants.
With unemployment rising, health services struggling, and young people fleeing NZ we should see this most recent attack on our Indian community for what it is - the ageless, wretched use of blame and distraction by a cynical populist. (1/2)
I was just about to copy that same screenshot. Lemme just call out racism with another way out of wack comment. Gross.
So just to be clear Luxon wants Kiwi families to pay a new tax on their power bills to build an LNG terminal that we don’t need & that will cook the climate, so that Methanex, a company contributing 0 dollars in tax themselves, can keep sending their profits offshore. newsroom.co.nz/2025/04/30/m...
The calls for trans people to be quieter as we're wiped out are only going to increase, and you owe it to your sisters and brothers to get louder and louder.
Watching him stumble and be laughed at is really cathartic.
"The problem is whiteness is a big lie told by powerful people subscribed to by losers"

NZ must reckon with the grim reality of our future: more storms, floods and heat.
This is a confronting situation. And yet, if we are to shield our communities, our infrastructure and our economy from the worst excesses of climate change, it is one we must confront.

Winston's racists, being told to tune in for racism, are instead getting a debate about select-committee report-back periods. And Winston is pissed about it. #NZPol
My step dad used to try and relate to me by saying the greens should pair with national. That'd be the end of a large amount of support for the greens. I'm tired of hearing the same idea being floated every election. It's a joke.
This iteration of the national party should be the final nail in the so-called "teal" coffin
I'm watching the debate on the first reading of the disestablishment of the Ministry of Environment, and I'm glad to hear the criticism of the idea of 'blue greens'. It's a delusion (I'd argue it's always been wishful thinking) especially with the magnitude of issues we face today. #nzpol
