This image could also apply to the price of iPhones, given the mining for rare earth metals it requires. And data centers required to power the increasing AI tech embedded in applications and tracking.

I don't know exactly what but something has to be done about the current commoditisation of science. We researchers cannot continue publishing-as-usual in a world where for-profit corporations are enclosing precious knowledge just to boost their profits.

Ireland No. 1 in Europe - yet again. GHGs rose faster (+3.2%) in Ireland in Q3 2025 than ANYWHERE else in Europe.

The next time you hear some politician blaming pearl mussels or the Habitats Directive for flooding disasters, might be a good time to point this out to to them.

Nothing Grows Forever So why do we expect our economy to?

“In that world, where GDP doubles in 35yrs, show me how we will be better off.

The math doesn’t exist.

If we double our resources in the next 35yrs, our already overstretched climate, land & water systems will collapse…” #degrowth

UK Housing Strategy written by a Degrowth Communist Housing fit for the future In my previous story about energy, I briefly touched on housing, because obviously it overlaps with energy in terms of solar roofs; and in terms of efficiency standards for heating and cooling etc. But now I’m going to go more in-depth on the type of housing policy I’d be pursuing. Obviously, this is extremely to the left of the UK establishment, and I’d probably get locked up at this point in authoritarian Britain if they find my blog.

Economic growth is still heating the planet. Is there any way out? Rising GDP continues to mean more carbon emissions and wider damage to the planet. Can the two be decoupled?

Economic growth is still heating the planet..

In 1960, globally the world was emitting 17 gigatonnes of CO2 a year..

As of 2024, annual carbon emissions of over 40 gigatonnes have been recorded..

Growth has a near mythical status in the affections of economists + politicians. But wishful thinking won’t solve the climate crisis. #Postgrowth economics is not about returning to the cave but about breaking free from our intellectual prisons.—@timjackson.org.uk

Is Economic Growth Over? The Left is Split on the Question of Economic Growth, But Is Growth Even Still Possible in Developed Economies?

Doing a bit of materialist speculation regarding growth and economics this week: I think growth for the most developed economies is stalled.

The real question is what to do now that growth is no longer possible.

New paper out: Encountering Degrowth
We propose “encounters” as a way to study degrowth as lived practice, seen in territorial dynamics across Greece, Southern Italy, and Indonesia, and what this reveals about political economy, agrarian change, and global capitalism

Flawed economic models mean climate crisis could crash global economy, experts warn States and financial bodies using modelling that ignores shocks from extreme weather and climate tipping points

William Nordhaus received the Nobel Memorial Prize for these flawed economic models, and Bjorn Lomborg built a highly lucrative career on them.
They told rich and powerful people what they wanted to hear.
