Verity Johnson: ‘Running the country like a household’ is a political con OPINION: Government knows there’s nothing similar between household borrowing and government borrowing. But it also knows that you don’t know that.

“So, let’s get one thing straight, you do not run a country like you run a household.

It’s deliberately misleading to say that. (So much so that economists in England started protesting its usage on the BBC.) Household debt and government debt are totally different.”

The Price of Remission When I was diagnosed with cancer, I set out to understand why a single pill of Revlimid cost the same as a new iPhone. I’ve covered high drug prices as a reporter for years. What I discovered shocked ...

Cancer drug Revlimid has its origin in a pill that cost patients $7.50 each.

Decades later, Revlimid costs more than $18,000 for a month’s supply...

Even though it still only costs about 25 cents to manufacture.

No system is perfect and we can all see flaws in our own.

After a decade of comparative work, I can tell the folk in Australia, France, and the UK that guys have pretty robust constitutional systems, all things considered.

I spent months in hospital, relying on the public health system. I have seen how badly we are failing our healthcare workers | Juliette McAleer The doctors’ strikes in NSW should concern us all – because a system that exploits its workforce also endangers its patients

A prize worth pursuing: has Elizabeth line shown what rail investment can achieve? Project has smashed forecasts on passengers numbers and created a story of regeneration along its route

“The assumptions on benefits are always wildly lower … they underestimate how transformational the projects will be.”

Same in NZ: recent PT projects outperform projections, as they’re based on car-brain assumptions.

CRL will overachieve like the Lizzie line.

Pastries

In Auckland, NZ would expect to pay at least $4.5 (USD) per pastry if on the artisanal end of the spectrum (eg www.wildwheat.co.nz/pastries/) and $6-8 (USD) for the bread depending on size…so prices don’t seem exorbitant, as long as quality is excellent.
