Ha! Or left is Marxist, right is Keynesian

“It’s happening..” It’s been happening in Australia for some years
As a climate science communicator I’m told that it’s important to finish on a message of hope. But honestly, what does it say about us as a society that a month long illegal war has been a greater motivator of decarbonisation than decades of environmental degradation and threat to our own wellbeing?
Why is this surprising? We’ve spent the last few decades gambling with multiple generations of kids so the oil barons can remain emperors….
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) isn’t going to collapse.
Wait, there’s a strategy..?
If you're in Hobart on Thursday 19 March, come to a public talk by Dr James Kirkham from @iccinet.bsky.social.
The lunch-time talk will be at 12.30pm in the Aurora Lecture Theatre at the Insitute for Marine and Antarctic Studies @imas-utas.bsky.social in Salamanca.
It's going to be a difficult week for many of Australia's climate researchers. 🧪
I'll say more once the details of the proposed cuts are known but it's looking like Australia is going to heavily reduce our climate science capacity and capabilities.

Genuine question for any #arctic experts; does Lake Huron actually ice shelves? An ice shelf -typically 100s of meters thick and thousands of km in area - is the floating extension of a glacier or ice sheet. This sounds more like a chunk of lake ice that broke off.

Loss of summer land fast sea ice (or just “fast ice”) threatens adult Emperor Penguins, not just their chicks. Not kidding, l could do with a good news Antarctic story ….
Congratulations Australians! We have a brand new opposition leader to divide, whine, and offer no tangible policy! A completely fresh look from the previous policy-deficient whiner! #newbeginnings
Explaining to colleagues in Wellington why it’s important to consider SaFT* first when looking at extreme sea ice loss. (*SaFT = Stability at Freezing Temperature ; because we don’t need another dull 3-letter acronym!). Photo credit: Amelie Meyer)
But are you “beyond humble “?
🌊 An important new study led by ACEAS PhD researcher Annika Oetjens from @imas-utas.bsky.social at @utas.edu.au shows the Southern Ocean may be storing 40 to 60 per cent less carbon at certain depths than many climate models assume.

Antarctic ice sheet folk, I'm looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Antarctic Ice Sheet Reconstruction [readvertised] for a 3.5yr appointment in Tasmania. Very flexible start date!
Join our new team, figuring out what is happening and what may happen in East Antarctica. 1/4

2️⃣ A new study led by @icecoldwill.bsky.social in @jgroceans.bsky.social looks at the ocean's role in limiting winter sea-ice growth. A metric called “Stability at Freezing Temperature” estimates how much heat the ocean must lose to the atmosphere for ice to form.

Sometimes I feel a little boring because I don’t travel so much these days. But there are some pretty spectacular adventures just 1.5 hours from #hobart … Images from a climb on the Candlestick, Tasman Peninsula. #climbing #tasmania
I’m currently getting “friendly reminders” to complete my assessments of FT applicants. I was thinking of submitting them them 2 months late and just doing 67% of the assessment. Because who am I to argue with the ARC standard…?
The global temperature was above average every single day of 2025.
So what is average now?
(Apart from anything else, every climber I know is way too cheap to forfeit a $4k deposit for carrying their own trash out…)
Point of correction; people who pay tens of thousands of dollars to get dragged up Everest aren’t “climbers”, they’re unimaginative cashed-up glory seekers
This is ghastly! It will have an impact not just on USA but the many nations that benefit on NCAR’s climate modelling expertise
Wait, this isn’t all dicking around and I’m supposed to be taking this seriously?
I dunno man, geologists are still a bit defensive about the whole Alfred Wegener thing…
the last @beeraquatic.bsky.social of 2025 is this Thursday! We don't think too much about the Indian Ocean here in Hobart, but it wields an influence on our weather. Find out how from @imas-utas.bsky.social Dr Helen Phillips. 6:30pm Nov 27th, Hobart Brewing Coy. #utas #hobart_events #scicomm
Line graph time series of 2025's daily Arctic sea ice extent compared to each year from 1979 to 2024 as shown with thin lines in colors from purple to white. This graph is for Baffin Bay. There is large daily variability, but a long-term decreasing trend during all months of the year. A seasonal cycle is also visible in this region.
This year's #Arctic sea ice freeze-up is clearly the latest on record for the Baffin Bay region (located between Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago). The extent of ice cover is a record low for the date there.

Cat’s are b*stards; they puke on your carpet, wake you up at night, and then break your heart… Thanks so much Warren for all the purrs, the fluff and the many lessons. #adoptdontbuy #10liveshobart #cats
