Exploring AI uses in archives and special collections: Integration, entities, and addressing need - Hanging Together Learn how archives and special collections are exploring using AI responsibly to meet accessibility requirements and improve access to unique resources.

I have read through the new OCLC blog post about AI in archives (hangingtogether.org/exploring-ai...) and liveblogged my response over on Mastodon.

Overall, it really doesn't feel like they consulted with archivists or took our expertise seriously.

Some highlights:

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.

the thing about the "don't give them the excuse they're looking for" line is that they're not fucking waiting for one, they're not bound by permission or truth or honor or consistency or any kind of legitimacy or rules, they're not fucking vampires, you can't keep them at bay by not inviting them in

As I understand it, this would actually be fairly easy to filter out as spam! As long as people don't call in *realistic* wild goose chases, ICE will still be able to do the important work of kidnapping people from their workplaces and homes ^-^

This election is effectively the one that determines who will be the next governor. The margin is likely to be no more than 100,000 votes. Never have New Jerseyans been this powerful in setting the direction of their state.

Vote tomorrow.

The Los Angeles Protests Are an Act of Self-Defense Residents of L.A. aren’t merely protesting ICE; they’re attempting to protect their communities from ICE’s raids.

"What we are witnessing in Los Angeles is not only a protest; it is self-defense." Fuck yeah, @melissagiragrant.com. Read and share this. newrepublic.com/article/1963...

A tired looking star with an above caption saying "the hanging in there star" and the bottom caption saying "post this star to let your buddies know you're hanging in there but you could lose it at any moment"

Sunday's Gathering featured a dramatic reading–by Jim Norman, Rob Eigenbrod, and Ed Gross–of the official transcript of a 1958 hearing in Newark by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. The hearing targeted John F. Norman, Jim's father.

How California’s Embrace of a Tough-on-Crime Measure May Undo a Decade of Reform The passage of Prop 36 marks a return to harsher punishments for some drug and theft crimes. Advocates worry it will also lead to a surge in prison populations.

Data shows that California property crime rates are at historic lows. But “people's perception of how at risk they are has changed over the last four years,” one researcher noted, in large part due to shoplifting videos that have gone viral on social media.

The Police won't Love you Back Cops are opposed to democracy — and liberalism as whole.

“If you have an idealized conception of the police as friendly cops patrolling the neighborhood and helping out, please let it go. That is both not the function of policing…”

Police are not primarily crime fighters, according to the data A new report adds to a growing line of research showing that police departments don’t solve serious or violent crimes with any regularity, and in fact, spend very little time on crime control, in contrast to popular narratives.

Big thanks to @mekka.mekka-tech.com for spotlighting this article in his thread on what police actually do, and why the NYPD’s slapstick performance after the UHG CEO shooting was not at all surprising.

We Minneapolitans have really got to get this evidence into the city’s political conversation.
