#TolkienTuesday #TolkienTrewsday #Tolkien "Forests" thread. Our primary mental image of the Shire may be of open green hills and dales, but the Woody End is one of the largest features of the Four Farthings. In this map of Bilbo's Favourite Walks, you can get a sense of the size of the woodland.
A clip of Tolkien's letter titled Beautiful place because trees are loved, cut from the yellowed page of The Daily Telegraph from 4 July 1972, and fastened to the background with adhesive tapes. It is owned and copyrighted by The Telegraph. The letter said: Sir, with reference to your leader on 29 June, I feel that it is unfair to use my name as an adjective qualifying gloom especially in a context dealing with trees. In all my works I take the part of trees against all their enemies. Lothlorien is beautiful because there the trees were loved; elsewhere forests are represented as awakening to conscious of themselves. The Old Forest was hostile to two-legged creatures because of the memory of many injuries. Fangorn Forest was old and beautiful, but at the time of the story tense with hostility because it was threatened by machine-loving enemy. Mirkwood had fallen under the domination of a power that hated all living things, but it was restored to beauty and became Greenwood the Great before the end of the story.
"Beautiful Place because Trees are Loved" is the title of Tolkien's letter to The Daily Telegraph (4 July 1972)
A response to an article that used the phrase "Tolkien gloom" for trees, he insisted that he's always on the side of trees against their enemies. 1/4

Trewsday is the Hobbit name for Tuesday! Tolkien Trewsday is a community event based on BlueSky but sometimes is run on other online spaces. Each week we form a fellowship to collectively post about a pre-selected theme about Tolkien (his works and his life) as well as adaptions, academic writing and creative stuff such as fanfic, fanart and cosplay. Themes are selected by myself (the organiser) and a steerage group but also by polls or guest hosts/curators. Together we will build a collective outpouring of creativity, knowledge and love for J.R.R. Tolkien. The inspiration for this comes from the highly successful #FolkloreThursday which engaged lovers of Folklore, academics, artists and more to share their love of folklore. We only ask that if you are joining in, please do so with courtesy and kindness in your posts/tweets. This is a positive-action community event, open to all and supportive of fan diversity. Intolerance, racism, bigotry have no place here. Thank you! In 2025 Tolkien Trewsday had a redesign. The Two Trees remain symbolic but now Telperion (Silver Tree) has a sword trunk and Laurelin (Gold Tree) has a staff trunk. There are two versions of this new design (Top and Left).

A tree bends to the left of the photo whilst a glade heavily covered with leaves and flowers takes up the greater part of the image. This is believed to be the glade where Edith danced for J.R.R. Tolkien and spark behind the legend of Beren and Luthien. I visited here on a guided trip by Tolkien Society member Michael Flowers in 2017.

He may be in the background but he’s most certainly the main player in this town! Rings of Power heartthrob, the shirtless king Waldreg, stands by the bar in the Tirharad tavern, his modesty protected by the Apron of Amon Sûl (it’s definitely weathered some hills!). Meanwhile two star-crossed lovers attempt to not sneak looks across the electric space Waldreg inhabits. A newcomer sits to the right, attempting to steal some of the viewer’s gaze with his bare legs. The lettered words “shirtless”, “ill-fated lovers” and “leggylass” float above this drama, but no one quite knows what they mean. Apparently this is all advertising the Rangers of the North and #TolkienTrewsday with a bold statement: “Always a bit of a thrill on #TolkienTrewsday, April is Rangers of the North takeover month”. Let’s get back to Waldreg sizzling in the corner…
It’s getting quite thrilling in Tirharad…
The fun continues in the ALT text.
