More often than times I visited someone whose toothpaste isnโt doing ok!
I was honoured to join the @adriftlab.bsky.social for a field season on Lord Howe Island. Something that will stay with me forever.

Not islands, but near one close to my heart, there is Lower East Pubnico, Centre East Pubnico, Middle East Pubnico, East Pubnico, Pubnico (!!!), Upper West Pubnico, West Pubnico, MIddle West Pubnico, and Lower West Pubnico.
That's 4 too many! I know they're green, but originality goes a long way. If they can name their towns Heart's Content, Heart's Desire, and Dildo, they should be creative enough when it comes to naming islands!
How many "Green Islands" are there in Newfoundland and Labrador that turn out to be Leachโs storm-petrel colonies?

Using a decades-long dataset on puffins in the Faroe Islands, we show a change in population age structure and relate the increase in older birds/decrease in cohort sizes to (pre-)hatch year food availability.

New paper with @seabirdsentinel.bsky.social in ES&T: We know Sable Shearwaters show measurable harm from plastic ingestion but this isn't just a story about one species. ๐งต 1/3
๐ doi.org/10.1021/acs....
An artistic photo of plastic from one Sable Shearwater chick laid out in a series of concentric circles on a black velvet background. Each circle has larger plastic with forks and tetra-pak lids in and full bottlecaps in the outermost layer.
Sable Shearwaters aren't an outlierโthey're a preview. Chick maximum plastic loads rose from ~200 pieces in 2011 to ~900 in 2025. And the plastics treaty has stalled.

Discarded fishing hooks, lines, etc. are deadly for waterbirds. Although there's no US law, many state/local regulations require signs and recycling containers in fishing areas for discarding fishing line, etc. Contact your local Parks & Rec or state Fish & Wildlife for help in your area. ๐ #birds
