I love this book so much. Funny, smart, loving and clever, it's basically everything I could want in a middle grade novel.

These…look not that bad to me? Is this how I learn all my clothes are actually hideous?

Saddened to learn of the passing of the great #GaryKelley —a huge inspiration for me. We own two of his pieces—this is one, called “The Three Mikes”. His shapes, textures, compositions, and mood are always lingering in the back of my artist brain. Warm thoughts to his family, friends, and fans. #

There's that moment in so much fiction when the villain tells the hero that empathy makes them weak and it's why they'll lose, and apparently 40 percent of our country sees that and thinks, "You know, Syndrome makes some good points there."

Illustration art of a child drawing their dream world. All this while, I've been mostly drawing what my son loves. This time I decided to take some time to think and draw what my younger self loved. I don't think we're that different though! We both love insects, birds and dragons.. Drawn digitally in Procreate and Photoshop

If I'd drawn him to order, his arms would have been more apey.

Its main character is a trans girl whose relationship with the world influences the plot in really interesting ways.
And not for nothing, but one of the characters reminded me of a little guy I drew 19 years ago.
My son just described him as “creepy.” If you agree, I hope you won’t let my drawing dissuade you from reading the book.
Thank you.

Oh my goodness I sure did like this book. Have you read it? Well if you haven’t please get your life right. It is funny and inventive and had at least two passages that made me pause and press my palm to my chest as if to hold my heart in.

84 years sounds like a long time. And I know in some ways it is. But it's also not that long. I still have living relatives who were in the camps and who were old enough to remember it. This isn't abstract or ancient history. It's part of the living memory I grew up with.
