The new Water Lane crossing is shaping up to be a game-changer for Newham. Love the clever diagonal design connecting Maryland to Forest Gate—prioritising people, cycles, and sustainable drainage with those new rain gardens. 🌿🚲
Almost at the finish line! #Newham #HealthyStreets #ActiveTravel
We just spoke to Cllr @plaistovian.bsky.social who says he’s been told section H is all open, both sides - so if the signs have gone, that’s something to celebrate!
Fans of big machines doing big roadworks, get yourselves to Westfield Avenue E20 in the evenings—resurfacing on the go, meaning that the new protected cycleway also means a fresh new carriageway surface for drivers and bus users. Great work @newhamcouncil.bsky.social @plaistovian.bsky.social! 🚜🚧
Thanks @carlafrancome.bsky.social for the pleasure of your company.
It was a great showing you around the amazing Royal Docks Corridor which has transformed Walking and Cycling in the south of the borough.
Newham spotted 👀 and Carla is right - what a revelation the Royal Docks Cycleway is! Safe, direct, convenient, attractive—everything we look for in high quality cycling infrastructure.
“Studies show LTNs drop crime. Motor traffic goes down, but footfall goes up. So ‘busy’ isn’t itself a good thing: busy with people rather than cars is”

THE THREAD IS HERE! 🙌🏻
This week, I had a fantastic tour of Westminster from @maxsullivan.bsky.social, to see what the council is doing to make it safer for walking and wheeling.
It was quite frankly, an extravaganza.
We met at Grand Junction, right next to … 1/25
It's good to see personal safety taken seriously as an issue.
The LCC's women's network found that one in three women stop cycling after dark because of personal safety fears.
We need TfL's cycle route criteria updated to make sure that all our journeys home are safe and well lit:
On my way to a @MeristemDesign lecture on SuDS and, oh look, a modal filter with a wonderful SuDS.
"Pavements are for people" - Lillian Greenwood
It's fantastic to hear about this Labour government's work to protect pavements from car parking.
New powers to enforce pavement parking would be devolved to local authorities to protect vulnerable pedestrians.
Brilliant listening to Sarah Coombes talk about the work the Government is doing in parking.

- Improving DVLA data collection
- dealing with gaps in the system

The 🚲 side of Jake Russell Walk is open.
Some lingering barriers suggest it might not be permanent.
🚶diversion is still signed.
Also at Junction 3, work is under way at the SE corner. The crossing island beside these works has been removed.
Along Romford Rd, the Richmond Rd modal filter at Junction 3 is also taking shape.
At Water Lane, the modal filter on the Louise Rd side looks nearly finished.
At the Redbridge end of Newham's C16, there are improvement works to the end of Capel Rd.
At Leyton Rd, work has now extended further south, beyond where C16 will turn heading east.
A look around the multiple works areas in Newham yesterday.
The Westfield Ave/International Way crossings are now marked.
Northbound cycle track towards Stratford International doesn't yet connect usefully back to the roadway.

Brilliant leadership from Sadiq Khan. The rapid growth of SUVs present a risk to pedestrians, especially children and the vulnerable. Read more via the link below! 👇

Today (11 March) local authorities have been given new powers to install side road zebra crossings at junctions across Wales.
This new legislation will give pedestrians priority at side streets and help support people to walk and wheel more.

Becoming more resilient to the global energy crisis will require more investment in building more sustainable energy systems. But we also need to adopt more energy efficient forms of transport.
This shift spurred government investment in cycling infrastructure, reversing car-centric urban planning and establishing the country as a global leader in bike commuting.
Faced with another energy crisis, it's worth remembering that during the 1973 OPEC oil crisis, which forced the Netherlands to adopt "Car-Free Sundays" and triggered a nationwide shift back to cycling due to high fuel prices and supply shortages.

Carnaby Street is a masterclass in urban design. Pedestrianisation didn't just clear the traffic, it cleared the way for the culture, fashion, and footfall that make this spot legendary. Proof that cities are for people, not just cars.

Paris urban biking investment helps cut pollution in half: “Between 2005 and 2024, levels of nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter — 2 of the most harmful pollutants to human health — have been slashed by 50% and 55%, respectively.” Via @momentummag.bsky.social momentummag.com/paris-proves...
