Same area, but now with the pressure visible: longlines, ropes and other fishing gear litter entangling gorgonians and covering the seabed. Chronic ghost fishing and structural damage that we urgently need to address.

Clip from the Tokmakia plateau (NE Lesvos): a mesophotic coralligenous reef with dense red gorgonians and complex bioconstructions. This is the kind of “animal forest” habitat our work focuses on documenting and conserving.

🪸New paper out on mesophotic coralligenous reefs in the NE Aegean. We used side-scan sonar + ROV surveys to map gorgonian assemblages and quantify the impact of marine litter in a Natura 2000 site.

These semi-enclosed European seas appear to have specific zones that "collect" larger amounts of macro-plastics, thereby affecting species such as marine mammals, seabirds, and sea turtles.

🗑️ As plastic represents the most common type of marine litter, these scientists expressed concern about its impact on marine life globally, particularly in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

🫧 They measured marine phytoplankton, seawater pH and temperature, and microplastics, gaining valuable insights into scientific methodologies while using accessible and frugal data collection tools.
🌊 The students had the opportunity to learn more about marine biodiversity and how humans play a major role in environmental change.
🏫 Continuing its citizen engagement initiatives with a focus on youth, NEMO-Tools team members from #NKUA and #INALE visited two primary schools of Kavala in collaboration to introduce students to key scientific concepts through presentations and laboratory activities.
The most delightful reaction to finding the purple #gorgonian site from our wonderful student Artemis. Truly beautiful site. Will be processing and posting the video footage within a week! Watch this space! 🧪🪸🐠🐟 #fieldwork #marinescience
