Mosaic of a lion in a rocky landscape clutching a leopard in it’s front paws. The lion has a fierce expression while the leopard looks fearful for what comes next. Now held in the MAN Napoli, inv. no. 114282.

✨Lion versus Leopard✨

This mosaic immediately captures your attention - the direct gaze of the lion forcing the leopard into submission is hard to miss. The mosaic has suffered some damage from subsistence over the years but feels acutely compelling even with the rough edges.

✨Brand New Episode - A New Republic?✨

As we emerge, bleary-eyed and slightly peckish from the Gallic Sack of Rome, we find ourselves in a new era – a new Republic, one might say! It is 389 BCE and Rome is in its rebuilding era.

It’s such a striking image that I wonder if the artist had a rooftop view to look down on the arena

When news of the riots reached Rome, the emperor Nero banned events at the arena for a decade! Today this fresco can be seen at the MAN Napoli.

✨Riot at the arena!✨

This fresco depicts a riot at the arena in Pompeii. The fresco likely depicts the riot that broke out in 59 CE between Pompeians and the neighbouring Nucerians.

Image description from the Mediterranean Museum in Sweden: “According to a research visit by Alfredo Buonopane, this sarcophagus fragment is part of the Getty Museum, 86.AA.701. Fragment from the sarcophagus of Titus Aelius Evangelius. Dated by the Getty Museum to circa 180 AD. The owner Titus with his wife Gaudenia Nicene. The man lies at table on a kline with a cup of wine in one hand and grapes in the other. His wife stands at the foot of the bed, raising a toast. The scene probably depicts a funeral banquet and celebration. Details from Titus' life as a wool merchant are included. Artefact no. MM 1997:001”

✨Titus Aelius Evangelius✨

This relief is thought to be from a sarcophagus depicting the freedman Titus Aelius Evangelius who was a woolworker. While other scenes appear to show him and his wife Gaudenia Nicene sharing wine, this scene shows Titus at work.

✨Thalassa, divine personification of the sea✨

Thalassa is thought to have mythological connections to the Mesopotamian goddess Tiamet, as well as the Titan Tethys, which further connects Thalassa as a potential mother of Aphrodite.

In stunning delicacy, Venus sits on a throne while wearing a crown. Before her stands the diminutive Cupid holding her staff. Behind her is one of her attendants (one of the Graces) who is busy securing Venus’ veil.
