The 700c Cloud That Preserved Pompeii in Seconds: In 79 AD, Pompeii was engulfed by a pyroclastic flow from Mount Vesuvius a fast moving avalanche of superheated gas, ash, and volcanic rock. #Pompeii #PyroclasticFlows.

A guide who survived. That’s how I’d describe the strange encounter I’ve been processing ever since. Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii have always been the crown jewels of Naples. Read the story at hikevent.com 👉 hikevent.com/vesuvius-and...

This small xenia (still life) depicts a rabbit nuzzling four figs. It may be exactly what it seems, or may have a deeper meaning. The rabbit is an animal of Venus (given its precocious reproduction), and figs frequently had sexual connotations. So perhaps this little still life was a wink and a nod to some hanky-panky. From Pompeii (signage from exhibitions it's been a part of describe it as from Herculaneum, but I don’t think anyone knows), and supposedly discovered in 1745. Dated ca. 45-79 CE. Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (MANN inv. 8630)
#HappyEaster to all who celebrate. Let’s pretend that this xenia fresco panel from #Pompeii is a rabbit with colored eggs (instead of figs). 🐇 🏺

Happy Easter!
Life imitating art. Fresco of dish of eggs from the Praedia of Julia Felix, #Pompeii and an exhibit of eggs that astonishingly survived the AD 79 eruption in Herculaneum. 🥚🥚🥚
A marble sculpture of a rabbit, crouched down on the ground, it's ears spread back, sniffing at a small basket of fruit.
#Easter bunny preparing for a visit?
#Roman marble sculpture that once adorned the space by a fountain, in front of a mosaic, in #Pompeii.
Do interpret as rabbit minding a basket of eggs rather than fruit if you wish....

Mount Vesuvius was dormant for 900 years before the catastrophic 79 AD eruption. IT CAN TAKE TIME FOR THE BIG EVENT. A DAY OF FIRE: A novel of Pompeii was indie published in 2014. Released by HarperCollins in 2023. THEN on it's 10th anniversary optioned for TV. #HistoricalFiction #pompeii
View up a deserted via Stabiana with a water tower on the right hand side, stepping stones at the crossroads and the shop and house entrances lining the road that leads to the outline of mount Vesuvius above which a large white cloud forms against a blue sky.
End of the day in #Pompeii
Like most of the paintings and sculptures in #Pompeii this was moved the Naples Museum for safe-keeping and a replica left in its place. The reason they’re holding a pen and scroll is uncertain, but one plausible suggestion is that it’s their marriage certificate.

New Insights into Ancient #Pompeii 🏛️: What Do Scents Reveal About Global Connections? A research team from #LMU, the University of Zurich, and other partners investigated ash residues from incense burners. The substances they discovered show that Pompeii was part of a global trade network.

In addition to obvious substances such as laurel — native to the #Pompeii area — and grape residues, fragrances from very far away were also found, says study leader Johannes Eber: “It was new to us that fragrant resins actually came from India or the sub-Saharan region.”
Two thousand years ago, the people of #Pompeii offered incense to their gods in fireproof terracotta bowls & chalices. Until now, these incense burners have received little scientific attention. An international research team has now, for the first time, taken a closer look at the ash residues.
Exotic fragrances found in house altars: The ashes of #Pompeii, destroyed by volcanic eruption in 79 AD, continue to yield surprises. A new study shows that fragrances recently discovered originated from tropical regions of Asia or Africa. #RomanHistory #AncientBlueSky

Pompeii (2014)
A love story set in the days of the eruption of Vesuvius. For me and a love of ancient Rome, it was an enjoyable watch although not the greatest of films set during the Roman Empire. Kiefer Sutherland is delightfully dislikable.
