Portland's mayor actually said we'd be a "flyover city" if we don't use taxpayer money to renovate the Moda Center. Pretty gross!
Did you know every state has an unclaimed property page that you can search your name on (or friends/family) and find unclaimed funds aka money you are OWED that was never given to you. My partner just found ours. So go search your states' page (and states you used to live) and claim your free money
If you’re around Portland come hang out with us on Thursday to talk about the evolution of policing and how progressive politics sometimes acts as a cover for law enforcement violence, and how we can erode police power in every neighborhood. But like optimistic and happy, not depressed
I checked this too.

In local election purdah.
This is not normal. At all.
An Israeli soldier has posted a video of themselves cooking in a home in Bint Jbeil, Lebanon after forcing its owners out.
Bint Jbeil is one of 55 Lebanese towns where Israel has forced all residents to flee.
corny
In the same manifesto, Palantir's owners argued that we need a national military draft, that soft power is over, and that we were too hard on Germany and Japan after World War II. I don't think that company should be allowed to exist anymore.

Thomson Reuters sells access to the CLEAR investigative database, which can include peoples' names, addresses, car registration information, Social Security numbers, and details on someone's ethnicity.
ICE uses CLEAR data to find neighborhoods to target.
personally I agree that we should indeed reject the hollow pluralism of pretending that we shouldn't judge Klan, Nazi, and sparkling eugenicist subcultures according to what they have historically produced, and would enthusiastically endorse rejecting inclusion of them in public life
more gardeners and farmers in office, please
Opening text of a thread by Palantir from X Because we get asked a lot. The Technological Republic, in brief. 1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation. 2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible. 3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public. 4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.
Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.

Also we should just note how insane it is that a highly militaristic tech company is openly advocating for changing entire countries to better fit their militaristic model
And Labour decided to give these fuckers our data
Extremely normal and fine for a company to put this in a public statement

Zohran Mamdani on CBS — “Socialist politics can flourish anywhere, because there is only one majority in this country, and that is the working class. It’s time we have a politics that puts them at the heart of what we’re doing, not in the appendix.”

why does this sound like the premise of an early Octavia Butler novel
Screengrab from The World, the Flesh and the Devil (Ranald MacDougall, 1959)
The earliest afrofuturist film that I know of is The World, the Flesh and the Devil (Ranald MacDougall, 1959) starring Harry Belafonte. It's an extremely unusual film about a nuclear apocalypse that also simultaneously attempts to address questions of racial politics post-integration.
Re: nostalgia for VHS tapes and other analog media, I saw someone say like "a VHS tape never sold my information to a nazi" and yes that's true! But the reason it's true is actually because Congress passed a law in 1988 specifically making it illegal for video stores to sell your rental history

On April 25, join a local event in defense of immigrants in your community. As the regime buys up warehouses to convert into concentration camps, it’s critical that we come together to oppose the literal warehousing of people in our country: www.mobilize.us/disappearedi...
My annual reminder that if you need to buy a window A/C this year do not simply buy the largest model you can afford. Energy Star has a sizing guide.
Why do you want an AC that is sized for your room?
Because an undersized A/C won't cool well and an oversized A/C will leave a space humid
