I've been using what little time and energy I have for writing the past few days to trim down two stories to get them under word limits. Finally got it done. Feels nice.

Has any wrestler from Boston ever had a signature/finishing move called the New England Slam Chowder?

If not, y'all can have that one as a freebie.

If the players fail, monsters will continue to be smuggled into the city for the amusement of rich assholes and wannabe warriors. An accident will occur; the adventure starts because containment failed. Plus the mastermind is building a network to get more involved in city politics.

Happy #LesbianVisibilityWeek! To help celebrate the occasion, @elizamaresauthor.bsky.social organised this amazing itch bundle with 94 sapphic books for only $40!

My two books, This Is How Immortals Die and Garden of Rotten Roses, are participating!

The cover for Beyond Here be Monsters by Gregory Frost. It shows a sepia toned city with a large fissure running through it and bug-like tentacled monsters crawling up from the hole.

This week’s #MondayReads is Beyond Here Be Monsters by Gregory Frost. Going through my backlog. Picked this up at an authors’ fair last summer. Out of the stories listed on the back, “a werewolf gets caught up in a bank robbery” sounds the most interesting.

Still need to work on maps and stats for the beast, but there are enough generic human stat blocks for minions and tougher versions for the captain. Key features would be resistence to bludgeoning, a blinding ink spray and the capacity to cast Grease. Combining features of a squid and a boar. 5/5

The key is to let the beast be a ticking clock even if they don't fall in. After a bit, it'll try making athletics checks to try and scale the walls. Players can use the bar to impede it. One time a player found the keg with the highest proof drink, broke it to pour in the hole and ignited it. 4/x

Of course, this doesn't have to be the end. Other adventures can happen and the problem can reappear in a different shape later. They've agitated a wealthy criminal, after all.

As for the fight itself, I've done "monster in a hole, don't fall in!" a couple times. Gives enemies something to do. 3/5

Part of the reason this fight is unavoidable is this is a potential fail state for the players. If they kill the boss without getting answers and don't investigate anywhere to get a lead (his office, his home, etc) the trail goes cold. They stopped the monster smuggling, but the source got away. 2/5

The second encounter after finding where the monsters go. The first can be avoided easily. The third would take a lot of good stealth and investigation checks, but it's possible to circumvent. The second? The players can stack the deck, but the enemies will not be talked down. 1/5

MC made sure his outfit was in order, and his mind wanders to why he went with the generic masked thief look. Years of experience have helped him understand typical client expectations.

Ash and Lahayne have public transit routes and schedules memorized.

Shogum has an old but well-kept RV. Ginra keeps an e-bike in it.

Maxi has a high-end electric car and might have bought to much into self-driving tech for a bit before coming to their senses.

Had a nice day out today. Went to Autism Delaware’s annual walk. Convinced my employer to sponsor again, though without a table. Not a big thread like last time, just happy this went better than last year.

The sequel to the fantasy WIP deals with stuff leading up to a war and trying to prevent it. But I need to work out how that winds up going. Things fail, but is it "tense status quo remains" fail or "fighting actually starts" fail. And even if it gets that bad, that's for a later story.

The detective WIP I've got on hold is set between the World Wars. The big fantasy WIP has a couple villains who want to start one for stupid, selfish reasons. But neither has one currently ongoing, and I'm currently not interested in writing one. But it'll probably come up eventually.

Text: “I also know that at this very moment, Arishem, mightiest of the Celestials stands atop twin pylons in the middle of this city…

Been reading through some old comics. Great. Another deadline I wasn’t aware of. Better start cleaning up…

“Hard to avoid” is the best way to put it. Even if you aren’t reading stories about direct combat, so much of sci-fi and fantasy stuff has something adjacent to it. Stopping wars, aftermaths of wars, preventing new ones, ect.

This one was surprisingly hard. Going with time-related vibes from the urban fantasy:

Time was a bit weird for us. We existed within linear time… mostly. It’s better to say we existed within the general area of the present.
(…)
Still, it made limited-time offers a little less limited.

First there’s the obvious ones: Star Wars and Warhammer. Right in the names. Plus fantasy has plenty wars, ongoing or recently ended.

A lot of the detective books I read tend to have one of the World Wars as an background element, mostly as a painful scar or a looming shadow.

Ash: depends who’s paying? Someone else? List of toppings. Out of his pocket? Cheese.

Shogum, Ginra and Maxi all go for the shop’s special. See what gimmick they’ve got cooked up. Same for Xiel.

Darius likes plain, Marionette goes all out.

Lahayne has a favorite she sticks to.
