An unconventional Rubisco small subunit underpins the CO2-concentrating organelle in land plants In many algae, photosynthesis is boosted by biophysical CO2-concentrating mechanisms, which pack the CO2-fixing enzyme Rubisco into liquid-like organelles called pyrenoids. Engineering C3 crops with a...

Our work on #hornwort #pyrenoids is finally out in @science.org! 🎉 We uncovered how hornworts pack their Rubisco into pyrenoids and successfully recreated them in Arabidopsis. A key step toward engineering more efficient photosynthesis in crops @btiscience.bsky.social www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Excited to announce I’m starting a new lab at @gmivienna.bsky.social (Vienna BioCentre) in Sept 2026

We study how carbon fixation is inherited and maintained in algae using cryo-ET, imaging, environmental sampling&more

Looking for people who want to build the lab together, get in touch!

Euler Hunt Can you find the Euler angles of a cryo-EM projection?

I had Claude make this as a mini-game for Relay's disconnect screen (like Chrome's dinosaur), but then pivoted to stand-alone. In this game, you have to find Euler angles matching the target projection, i.e. cosplay RELION. It can be pretty hard. Works on mobile too! warpem.github.io/euler-hunt/

We genetically disconnected starch from the matrix in the algal pyrenoid!

A saga1;saga2 double mutant lacks a starch sheath!

Our model: SAGA1 & SAGA2 locally initiate starch on the pyrenoid surface by enriching starch precursors.

Why Most Published Research Findings Are False Published research findings are sometimes refuted by subsequent evidence, says Ioannidis, with ensuing confusion and disappointment.

"Simulations show that for most study designs and settings, it is more likely for a research claim to be false than true."

Wonder whats wrong with this place. Do we need more emojis, more "thrilled to announce" and "happy to share", and "congratulations🥳" as super pesonal one-click option?

All of the above, often minus FP OE. On top, I find it helpful to consider the broader functional context. What interactors are known? Relevant sequence motifs present? Domain annotations? What are orthologs in other species doing? etc.

Experimental evidence for enzymatic cell wall dissolution in a microbial protoplast feeder (Orciraptor agilis, Viridiraptoridae) - BMC Biology Background Several protists have evolved the ability to perforate the cell walls of algae and fungi to specifically feed on their cell contents. These phagotrophic “protoplast feeders” represent an in...

Entire cytoplasts even. Curious to see what happens where both plasma membranes meet.

To build the body plan of an animal, cells must adhere to one another via cell-cell junctions. We now know these assemble as punctate protein complexes containing thousands of proteins, but how this occurs remains mysterious. 1/n 🧪

Hey Mark, pretty cool thanks for the thread. Any idea what the Cno nuclear localization is about - randomly passing in and out or does it have nuclear function?
