Thanks for sharing this, Anne. Fascinating. My grandad was keeping a secret diary in Fukuoka camp too. As you've done, I'd like transcribe it and share it online. These men, and their stories, are too often forgotten. ❤️

On VE Day I think about Doreen Yarwood who, as a 7-year-old, was pulled with her mother from the wreckage of a school basement shelter in which 166 were killed. A German parachute mine collapsed the shelter in Durning Road, Liverpool, on the night of 29 November 1940. 1/4

Thinking about my grandad – and other #FEPOW - this morning. In Ube-Sanyo Fukuoka camp, Japan, he wouldn’t hear that #WW2 was over until 20/08/45. At the start of May he was listing fantasy foods (being Lancastrian, it was mostly pies.) #VEDay80 #VEDay

😃👍Interesting you say that... there are links between the two books! The house in WICHA was based on one in Clappersgate, Ambleside, but the one in the new book was (in part) inspired by Levens Hall, nr Kendal.

A cautionary tale from my publisher. Avoid a family implosion this #Christmas and buy them a book. It’s still not too late. #BuyBooks #GiveBooks (👏@simonschusterUK) 🎄

A letter written by Frank Heap to the family of George Foot who had been killed on the first day of the battle of Cambrai.

107 years ago, my great-grandfather's tank, D51 'Deborah' was destroyed at Cambrai. To him fell the awful task of writing to the families of the men he commanded. The most eloquent tribute I can offer today . "All finer fellows than I shall ever be." #cambrai #cambraiday
