Roy Pagani's story is one of incredible resilience. The only European to successfully escape from the Burma Railway , he attempted a 600-mile trek to India. Captured and tortured, he survived by creating a false identity as a downed American airman.

#OTD 1945, my great uncle, George Henry Hall, was liberated from his POW camp in Thailand. He spent over 3 & 1/2 yrs in cruel captivity & was forced to work on the Death Railway via a few camps, inc Changi, to start with. He was repatriated not long afterwards. Poor sod.

Remembering family on #VJDay80, who were in the Far East, inc my Army Commando grandfather, a great uncle in the SWB's, one in the RAF, plus one as a #FEPOW at the fall of Singapore. With the dropping of the bombs, it cut short their suffering & most probs saved their lives.

Thinking about my grandad – and other #FEPOW - this morning. In Ube-Sanyo Fukuoka camp, Japan, he wouldn’t hear that #WW2 was over until 20/08/45. At the start of May he was listing fantasy foods (being Lancastrian, it was mostly pies.) #VEDay80 #VEDay
