Air supply in a monsoon was revolutionary in 1942. Lambert’s (pic here in later life) rescue relied on airdrops of rice, bully beef, and even cash. But it wasn't easy: supplies were lost in the jungle, and one bundle of 5,000 rupees bounced off a cliff! #ForgottenWar #MilitaryLogistics #RAF

When the Japanese began brutally torturing the Karen people to find him, Major Seagrim made an extraordinary decision: he gave himself up. He told his captors, "Treat the Karens generously. They're not to blame. I alone am responsible".

The retreat ended at Shwegyin/Kalewa on the Chindwin, the graveyard for the Burma Army’s stuff. Everything had to be destroyed before the men were ferried across. There was still a brutal walk to Imphal, but they were at the end of a gruelling 900-mile withdrawal.
