The retreat ended at Shwegyin/Kalewa on the Chindwin, the graveyard for the Burma Army’s stuff. Everything had to be destroyed before the men were ferried across. There was still a brutal walk to Imphal, but they were at the end of a gruelling 900-mile withdrawal.

A single mistake nearly proved catastrophic. A 2-day halt by the exhausted 1 Burma Div left the route to the vital town of Monywa undefended. The Japanese seized the opportunity, & repeated Allied counterattacks failed, threatening the entire escape route

As a young staff officer, Lunt had a unique view of the high command. He found General Alexander (3 from L) too refined. In contrast, Bill Slim (2 from R), in an ill-pressed shirt he’d likely slept in, was both “impressive and reassuring” and “dominated the scene”. #BillSlim #WW2 #BurmaCampaign

James Lunt’s 1986 book was a "literary catharsis". After 40 years, he had to get the horror of 1942 off his chest. The book is filled with his anger at the incompetence and the complete chaos of a country unprepared for war. #JamesLunt #BurmaCampaign #WW2 #Memoir
